I read somewhere on these interwebz (so it MUST be true) something of interest. Back in the day, if youz guyz remember, cigarettes were displayed right up front on the counter at the local candy/general stores. 'Tis said that the tobacco companies would pay a premium to the store owners to put the cigarettes in arms reach of customers, right next to the candy.

I don't remember that at all. I know that in my Dad's store people had to ask for cigarettes, and I remember it being the same everywhere else in the town I grew up in. I don't know if it was a local or state law, an arrangement with the health dept., or just individual preference of the store owners. The only "arms reach" alternative that I'm aware of were vending machines. It was probably different in other places.

Tex, I remember a lot of things, but not prices that low... We as minors in my Uncles store used to sell cigarettes, wine and beer back then. Nobody ever checked and that is how we used to supply ourselves also. I got my first taste of Boones Farm Apple from that store... LOL... Today, I cannot imagine that I used to like that stuff. Later I moved onto Pabst Blue Ribbon.

I always swore I would quit smoking if cigs ever went more than $1 a pack - man did I ever lie to myself many a time over... Here in Ga. they are currently going for $5 for premium cigs and you can still buy the cheap ones when they are on sale for around $3 a pack... Brown and Williams used to be in one of the next towns until a few years ago and they downsized with a reorg...

I need to add - I no longer partake in alcohol except for a glass of wine with dinner on occasions - when I married my wife 23 years ago it is one of things that I gave up. Quit smoking back then also, but that one did not last back then, but it will now...

I haven't brought my story over yet...and I would like to say thanks Tex for restarting the thread. Maybe 'Restarting the thread' is not the correct jargon, that said, I get a little POd about the sensitivity of some folks . I eat meat :vapor:, I eat veggies, fish and love good old down home cookin'. I don't eat live animals, sorry it's just one of my little idiosyncrasies...they must not be breathing when I eat them!.

Thanks Tex! :toast:

Good you found us. Grab a chair, tell a yarn and enjoy yourself... But please let us avoid discussing the break up of the other thread... or making snide comments...

The reasoning was that the younger crowd would be tempted to steal them...

All I'll say is that I know it worked...

WOW! Joe, Gadd, Corpa, Bullette, Diva, Tooth....hope I haven't overlooked anyone. Great to see all of you here; old friends, new friends....welcome all.

Nah, Wendall....I was awakened at 0545 with the news that a close friend passed away from heart failure. This has come as a most grievous shock to all of us; Dawn just celebrated her 42nd birthday, and her husband Will is totally devastated. I only have a few minutes to visit with you before we meet to see what we can do to help out. This has robbed our lives of a big portion of joy as they were such a great couple who, no matter if you were down, always lifted you up with their good spirits and happiness. I can't imagine the depth of Will's loss and sorry and Dawn will be sorely missed by us all.

I always wish all of you the best and have a great day.

Sorry for you loss. Oh my 42 is not the age to go that is so sad.

Awww, so sorry to hear your news. Sometimes life just jumps up and kicks you in the gut. Don't let that prevent you from remembering and celebrating the joy of having her in your life. Draw strength from each other and know that our prayers are with you all.

I just blinked and now have to catch up on 6 pages. You all know we are supposed to be slowing down right?
Havent you got the memo?

Yesterday I helped a neighbour lay down new sod. 6 pallets. He is 64 I am 55. I can not move today.
My frieking back hurts so bad and he is in his yard today (borrowing a Casius Clay term) and dancing like a butterfly.

I HATE him

I remember as I was about 10 years old and lived In Germany I had to get meals on wheels for a WW1 vet living behind us.
They did for some reason only deliver to a certain spot on the street. Anyway he smoked 3 cigarets per day that I had to get at a kiosk. They cost 10 pfennig per cigaret which at the time was about 2-3 cents. I also remember the times the cost went up and every time I said no way I am going to pay that. Oh how wrong I was hihi.

Newesmokr - That actually bothered *me*, and not much does. If people are going to talk like that on this thread, I'm outta here.
Sandy

Glad you spoke up. I'm a sportsman and support your request to avoid topics like that 110%.

Regardless of the majority/minority opinion split on 'this' subject, as well as the First Amendment guarantee of freedom of expression, I too urge folks and request them to avoid it in any posts.

We have enough other 'stuff' to talk about so let's be considerate of others feelings and avoid it.

Two competing threads for the Old Mature folks. This is getting ridicules.
I will no longer participate in this one or any other one of that kind.

Yeah I just saw that myself. I agree it is all pretty ridiculous and is pretty immature. The reason I started this thread was because the other one was closed not intending to compete with another one. All it is doing is causing more division and is all pretty silly and making us look like a bunch of jr hi kids. lol

Newsmoker:
What I objected to was you saying

"I better stop before someones their tender little feelings get hurt."

And, although you wrote me a PM and scolded me for saying I object to that here in public, we're out in the open here. Period. If you want to talk that way on this thread, I don't want to be here.

I consider a lot of people here my friends, and would love to stay on; but I find that kind of talk out of line.

You are too funny! I hear ya though. You'd think after living in this house for 24 years I'd be fine running up and down the steps while re-doing our upstairs. Wrong!! At least I'm not winded like I was when I was smoking. This up and down ladders and scooting around the floor painting baseboards is upsetting these bones! My stamina is just not here anymore and I'm only 62. Good grief, makes me wonder if I'll just be immobile by 72!! Just roll me over once in awhile and bring me food, oh yeah, and my juice!

Tex, you reminded me of a trip I took back in 1976 (during my younger military days). It was Jan 3rd and when we left Northern California and it was -10 outside with snow on the ground. We were all bundled up with long johns, overcoats, mufflers - the works - we were headed for the Philippines. When we landed the pilot announced - "It is a nice cool 87 degrees out - hope you enjoyed your flight"... (a 97 degree change) When they opened the doors - woooosh covered in sweat and everyone was stripping every thing they could legally (LOL).

A few weeks later we were in Kunsan (S. Korea) - left the Philippines with a balmy 91 degrees out in the late afternoon and when we landed it was -30 windchill factor with the wind coming in over the currents from the coast...

The Philippines you can depend on the weather - they only have two kinds - Hot and Wet or Hot and Dry... Korea has all seasons and 50 degree swings in one day is not unusual...

Now that takes some getting adjusted too...
