I vape anywhere but smoking areas if I can help it. I don't want to be near it. It stinks. It makes me stink. Odor is one of the biggest reasons why I switched in the first place.

I have permission to do so at almost every bar my friends and I got to regularly. It is not illegal to do so indoors where I live, and there is no ordinance in the city in general. Although the University of Kentucky (via Ellen Hahn ) has deigned not to let me do so on any of their property, so I don't. I don't stealth vape because the visual is part of the habit for me, and when I am eventually confronted, I put my PV down. I hand the manager or employee an information card and answer any questions they have. I smile and nod a lot while they express their concerns. And then I ask if the manager or owner would allow me to continue. If they still don't want me to, I will never do it in their establishment again.

Of the, maybe, two dozen times I've done this, I've only been turned down once. At the local comedy club, and the owners reason was, "It's very dark in here, and someone won't be able to tell that's not a cigarette, and will assume they can smoke. I'm sorry, but I'll have to ask you not to". She was exceedingly apologetic, and I gladly refrain from vaping in the comedy club. She's the owner, it's her choice.

And I can't tell you how many cards I've given out at restaurants and bars because of this. I generally have a small crowd whenever I'm in public. Two employees at a Waffle House I go to, three bartenders from the bars I frequent, and two servers from two other restaurants I patronize have all tried vaping. And most of them probably wouldn't know about it if I didn't go about my vaping in public the way I do. I've never really experienced much in the way of a negative reaction, either. At first, sure, sometimes, but that's because folk assume (understandably) that I'm smoking. When it becomes obvious that I'm not, it has always become a non-issue.

You can refrain from vaping anywhere but smoking areas if you want to, but I never liked smelling like smoke, and I'll be damned if I go back to reeking of it again. YMMV, IMHO, etc.

There are a few sides on this subject and to me, how I vape in public is SOLELY based on my mood at the moment.

Being a youthful rebellious Libertarian sort, my conscience tells me to vape everywhere proudly and educate everyone. Day to day feelings dictate otherwise.

1. If I'm in a decent mood and I'm out shopping or doing something that will take awhile, I'll happily vape in public and enjoy informing people with any questions they bring to me.

2. Often, I'm just trying to get a chore done and don't feel too... chatty. In that case, I'll leave it in the car or I'll hold the PV in my fist (that way if anyone thinks "uh oh smoke", they'll see that I've clearly got my entire hand on the part that's supposed to be burning) and blow down towards the ground.

That's where the contention is with most people. If you hold a PV like a cigarette (especially one that looks like a cig) and exhale your vapor as you would a smoke, people easily jump to that conclusion. If you make it look a little different, then the common sense questioning notion typically triggers. In that case, people will just stare at you funny, which doesn't bother me at all, or they'll ask.

I'm still debating about ordering a ton of business cards that have a short paragraph about what vaping is with the ECF URL on them. Might make things easier when I'm not feeling especially chatty, but want to vape everywhere at the same time.

As far as vaping with the smokers, I understand and mostly agree with the notion that it gives PV's a bad view.

On the other hand, some of the best random people I've ever chatted with are smokers in smoking sections when I used to be pack a day.

I say to do what you want. A-holes who vape are going to make it look bad regardless. Awesome people who vape will do otherwise. Generally I would say, if you're a nice friendly and social person, then please vape anywhere and everywhere. Those are the people I want educating everybody :)

I too cause controversy in public- by wearing fur. But I handle it well.

People come up to me, stare at my fur coat (with hanging heads tails and all- I like to make a “yes its real!” statement), then tell me what a horrible person I am to support animal torture. I smile and in a friendly manner explain the things most people don’t know. The animals are treated humanely. The horrible “skinned alive” videos were investigated and proven to be fakes. The meat is utilized, either for cat/dog food or for human consumption. And, most importantly of all, fur is what wildlife biologists call “incentive conservation”. The fur industry is deforestation’s #1 enemy, and based on the decisions we make, the entire future of life on earth hangs in the balance.

I say be on your toes, at all times ready to calmly and politely state the facts. And who knows? Maybe you’ll convert a lot of people. I know I do.

That, and get an e-cig with a cherry some color other than red ;)

if i was a bar waiter, i would hate to have the extra hassle of checking whether a customer is vaping or smoking. or if i was a security officer... imagine seeing it on cctv and having to run out on each single incident to make sure it's not a real cigarette.

But if said waiter or security officer was truely observant, he/she would easilky be able to tell the difference.
1) the e-cig never burns down, unlike a real cig that gets smaller.
2) The e-cig gets put into a pocket and or case with an end that is not "smoking". Yet the cigarette gets put in an ashtray or thrown on the ground and stepped on. and has an end that smokes. LOL

But I do understand what you are saying. I work around many security guards that used to complain all the time about them. but I spent some time explaining and teaching them, and now they can spot a "fake" almost faster than the real thing.

Blimey! I have to disagree with this.

Being shy about our e-cigs would be missing the whole point. I know what it is. You know what it is. And we all know these things need to be seen by the general public in order to be understood. This certainly won't happen if we vape shadily.

that's true, too.
but with regard to what Carden was saying, a security guard is usually expected to react immediately when they see a cigarette.

Being that I used to be security personnel back in the day, trust me on this.

talk to them about it. Show it to them. 90% of Security personnel smoke. This will be something that will interest them not only because of their career path, but because it will be something to save their life. Make sure to carry an extra one on ya, so that they can try it out and see for themselves.

Last year. I would go to Club DJ's all the time. When I started Vaping, I showed it to the bartender, and she loved it. Miffed a few of the bar flies, but the staff would just tell them to pre-order one from me, and a few even did.

When Security was there at night... they would alway bum an extra PV that I had on me (I always carried 3 fully assembled PVs on me, and would generally vape off my USB PT, and keeping a battery for myself for on the way home), and they would love me all the more for it and would back me up incase anything went down :)

Just comes to show that sometimes being sweet can go alot farther than shoving it down someone's throat.

Vapers shouldn't be hiding off in a corner all the time, no. In regards to vaping publically, my though on it is this: Not yet.

I think going out with the smokers and vaping on the street is a great way to expose people. When the concept and mechanics of vaping begin to transition into "common knowledge," THAT would be the time to start taking people's understanding and receptive good will for granted. Certainly not now, IMO.

This attitude is part of the problem. By continuing to act like you are smoking as well as subjecting your self to second hand smoke and smelling like you are smoking, this only feeds the bad perceptions that will support getting PV's banned. We all need to be willing to educate non-smokers but, as I said before, in respectful manner. If someone says no, after explaining it first and it is there establishment, then you don't vape.

If you only vape where smokers can smoke, then you are telling the world, YOU ARE JUST ANOTHER SMOKER.

I like to argure with people. I like to smoke my e cig, and I try and get peoples attention. A short story shall we. I was at an olive garden smoking my e cig, the woman behind me was screaming YELLOW, RED, BLUE , BLACK into a nintendo DS. I think its that darned brain teaser game. anyway I was puffing away when she looked up and said sir, um sir. I stared at her like an idiot. People hate that. Could you stop smoking in here? Im not smokeing I said. Oh well yeah you are, I can see the cig in your hand. She said it in a jersey shore skank attitude kinda way and that set me off. Listen (name of a female dog) I didnt complain when you were screaming colors into your f-ing DS now f-off and leave me be. Needles to say I was removed from the building and had to pay from outside. # year old daughter with her or not she had no bizness in my bizness. :D happy vaping. And i do agree with you. Im just an a hole.
