Mech tubes, the positive should be facing the button, away from the face towards the vent holes.
I could be wrong about this most say the other way towards the face. True mechs are not polarity dependent, but there may be issues with contacts. The 510 is smaller, so it is more likely to just contact the positive while the button contact tends to be larger and if a wrap and ring are damaged it might be more inclined to make contact to positive and negative.

In the SOI X, the mod will only fire if the battery is facing the switch as a safety feature. But, this may be a safety feature particular to this mod and the switch may be specifically designed to make contact with the positive lead and why the warranty is void is you disassemble the switch.

with my others (9 i think ) some have had to have the contacts adjusted slightly to get them to fire with positive down..i'm looking at you geekvape...

How about a regulated mod?
Those cheapo testers usually are less accurate than what's in your mod and with some the reading is dependent on the charge left on their batteries...
Unless you have only mechs (or stick batteries) you don't really need one of those testers.
No, all I have are regulated. It seemed like it might be easier on a little flat thing than a box though, and maybe I wouldn’t knock that off the counter as easily, lol.

Do I have to worry about shorts? I’m using an old Cuboid 150 w. I mean I wouldn’t be devastated if I broke it but I’d rather not.

I like my Coil Master and GeekVape has a decent one too. I find it easier to build on the them, but some prefer to use the mod. Either way will serve your purpose.

When firing, the first thing a reg mod will do is read the resistance, when it's 0 (or below firing threshold) it won't fire. Only a horribly bad designed board would break.
If you're concerned your atty+mod could be knocked across the room while building I'd suggest getting a $2 atty build stand.

There is a thread on the subject.
Positive up or down in a tube mech mod?
It didn't give an exact answer although it seems most are saying pos. side toward the atty. I always put the batteries in positive side up out of habit. I may be wrong in doing that, especially in faux hybrid mods. I try to make sure everything is in top condition and use only the most dependable devices available. That incident was equipment failure on a Smok Magneto (surprise!) Which taught me a lesson in Both the importance of quality in mech mods and the lack of quality in Smok products. This infographic explains the danger of a dead short from a bad battery wrap with pos. side down in an unlined tube. (I love infographics)

i am going to read more on the subject. Still not sure which is best. If the other is better then I'll switch.

Edit: @NolaMel here is some safety info for mechanical mods
