Good Morning Shiny People
You are explaining this well, I am just dumb. I don't get how the drop in coils used to use would be different. If they were low resistance, like 0.25 then it was listed at higher wattage than a coil that was 0.5 or 1.0.
This one definitely on the list

You can also put no thought into it with a regulated mod and it will still work. I'm stuck on 24G and the biggest coil I can fit.I always just choose the thinner wire options for faster ramp. Saves me having to fool with the wizard.![]()
If you have a bulkier coil. (Thicker guage) then it will also read lower but take more heat(wattage) to function as expected.
So if I make a 30g coil and a 24g coil with the same resistance respectively I'll need a lower wattage setting for the thinner guage coil to give me a similar end result as the 24g coil.
I was just as 'dumb' when I got into coil building. At first I went purely by resistance as that was what I was used to, coming from Zenith coils. And yep, in drop-in coils generally the lower the resistance, the more wattage you use.
In terms of building a single coil, Kanthal has the highest resistance, followed by Ni80 and then ss316L. There's plenty of other metals we can use, but these are the three main ones.
As you already know, 28g and 26g are better for lower wattage vaping. Here's some examples:
All coils have a 2.5mm id and 6 wraps, and I've linked them to Steam Engine.
ka1 28g = 1.2Ω
ni80 28g = 0.8Ω
ss316l 28g = 0.6Ω
All 3 have a similar heat capacity, and suggested wattage despite the differences in resistance.
Until I got into building for an unregulated mod, I just threw the coil's resistance out the window - and focused on heat capacity instead![]()
A salted caramel hot chocolate sounds really good right now.Pita of a day at work, thankfully I was so busy time flew by fast. Relaxing with a lovely hot chocolate spiked with digiorno salted caramel + a couple drops of MF caramel + a healthy dollop of cream. Perfect ending to the day. Might have to try creating mix.

One of the main perks with rebuildables is the ability to change your wick if you go to high on wattage. Almost impossible to ruin the wire, just the wick.I appreciate you all helping me understand this stuff a bit better. I spent so many years using regular drop-in coils and mostly in direct lung tanks. So I still had it in my head that low ohms = high wattage. But drop-in coils and wrapped coils are very different from each other.
@AngeNZ, you mentioned that you didn't care about resistance until you started using unregulated mods. Why is that? I only use regulated mods, but I wanted to use the right wattage because I figured if I didn't I would burn or mess up my coils.
I guess I thought you could mess up the wire too. Good to know that is not a problem. One of the main perks with rebuildables is the ability to change your wick if you go to high on wattage. Almost impossible to ruin the wire, just the wick.
He's an excellent blokeI like that Todd guy. His reviews are good and he isn't obnoxious like some other folks on Youtube.
