Hi Gang,

It's with a heavy heart that I just came back from the Vet.
My Buddy Shadow passed away tonight at 8:05 pm. I miss him terribly already.
He was a great guy with a big heart!
I know that he's in a better place now:nun:. RIP Shadow

LJFinFLA and Pokemom ,

So sorry to hear about your losses , i had a brutal time dealing with my pets death , i'm way too sensitive for a guy actually but it is what it is .

What i do nowadays is drive around late in the evenings and feed stray cats and dogs , i feel so bad for them especially in this cold weather , i have plenty of food in my car for them .

Pets are family to me , i actually like them a lot more than most people .

I want to say one thing to anybody considering a pet :

Folks , DO NOT RULE OUT your local shelters because there are outstanding animals that are in dire need for a loving home .

Most are there by no fault of there own , someone got too old and couldn't care for them , a family moved and pets weren't allowed etc...

I have got all my pets from shelters and not a single one disappointed , all showed unconditional love and each one added so much more happiness to my life and they will do the same for you .

Please DON'T RULE OUT your local shelter and visit them first , i bet you will be very glad you did .

Older dogs are worth adopting to , show them love .

Thanks folks
Herb, nicely put. I don't think you're "too sensitive for a guy". It seems being sensitive has a negative connotation when in fact, it simply means you're open to *feeling*.

I agree with you regarding shelter adoptions. We've adopted senior cats from our local shelter and have never regretted our decision. I have a soft spot for the "broken ones".

Bless you for feeding the strays in your neighbourhood. The world needs more people like you.

Ok. I'm bumming. My stupid paypal account is WACK. So, according to my ECF existence --> I'm not longer a supporting ecf member. You'd think I'd be smart enough to figure out what that dang problem is. But, I am NOT. It's irritating.......
Does ECF notify you when your paid membership is about to expire?

Uh-oh. I just noticed that I'm no longer a Supporting Member. I guess that answers my question.

Good to hear Vapez! :)

Seems like yesterday you came in here raging about your Vision Spinner and Evod!! lol
You caught on quicker than most!
Take it easy bro!
Hehe yes I remember. I will take it easy when the regulations attack this may. After that I won't buy anything more. Because most will be illegal and I'm stocked anyway :)

So sorry to hear that, LJ. Never an easy time. Lost Red, my avi, last spring.

LJF and Pokemom, I am so sorry. It is so very hard to lose your furbabies.

Sincere condolences LF and Pokemom! Always a sad thing to lose a pet...

Oh no LJ, I am so very sorry. I know how much it hurts. Little furry ones really weave their way into our hearts. I hope the memories of your beloved Shadow replace the hole in your heart.

Thinking of you.

Really sorry to read your post about Shadow @LJFinFLA. Our pets are so much part of our lives :(

RIP Shadow.

So sorry to hear about your loss as well @pokemom :(

Thank You all for the kind and heart-felt words. My wife and I truly appreciate it. Unfortunately for us this is not our first to have passed. We have been rescuing Dogs & Cats for the past 30 years. Since we've been married we have had 5 Dogs and 12 Cats. We now have 5 cats left and we feed a stray that comes to our lanai daily. Those who have felt the Love of a rescued animal (or any animal) have experienced True Love! It will take awhile for me to get over Shadow because of the special bond that we had. We will continue to do what we do because the Love we receive from them out lasts any grief or pain that we feel when they pass, and their memories will last forever.
Thanks again all.

Oh...that is heartbreaking! Just a few days ago I was reading about Shadow and how he'd follow you around. It's like I feel like I have lost him, too.

I'm so sorry @LJFinFLA . So very very sorry.

You guys that have done multiple rescues... Any tips for trying to domesticate feral cats? There's a little black cat in our neighborhood, often shows up on my various porches -- the back to get a drink of water, or the front to lie in the rocker and stay out of the rain... but every time we open the door, he runs off like a mad thing. We feel really sorry for him, seeing him out in the cold, and he's sooooooooo skinny, but so far we're not having any luck getting close to him. Our cat isn't helping much either; everytime she sees him, she "yodels" -- that weird noise that's sort of like a growl but not really. And I've heard them outside hissing and spitting and yowling at each other -- which is why we think the little blackie is probably male; she doesn't seem to have any issues with female cats, just males (she's fixed, so maybe she just doesn't see the point of male cats!).

Thanks fourth! He was more like a dog then a cat. Greeted you when you came home. Loved everyone that came in the house. I enjoyed 20+ years with him and could not have asked for anyone better!

Thanks Rixsta. Much appreciated.

Ferals need a lot of coaxing. They tend not to trust anyone. You need to build a relationship with them and earn their trust. It can take some time and even then they might not become too friendly. We used to have 3 feral cats living on our patio in NY, which are now house cats here with us in FL. In the winter I used to cover the patio table with a tarp and make an entrance for them. I also made little huts for them out of cheap styrofoam coolers for them to sleep in and put a some straw in them for warmth. They used them all winter long. In due time they will trust you. The one that comes to our lanai now has been coming for about 4 months. It still will not let us get anywhere near it but it now doesn't run away from us. He keeps a distance of a few feet from us. We have put the food inside our lanai with the door open but he will only come in around a foot. Little by little we will get him in further. Our remaining cats are not bothered by him and they will sniff each other but only from opposite sides of the screen.
Hope this helps you. Please don't frustrated with him and I'd be glad to answer any questions.

When I got my cat Spooky, it was my grandparents cat in upstate NY. It was actually my granddads and my great grandparents did not let her inside so she lived outside and I found a bunch of hay in the barn where she had made tunnels through for sleeping. Once me and my mom got her inside she was still very comfortable in that house because he used to be able to let her in. She would lay in the bed and not even move when I pulled the covers lol. When we brought her back down here home, she was very skid-dish/shy.
We have a walk in attic upstairs and she stayed in there for 6months. Finally she was able to come into the room in which she stayed under the bed for another 6months (BTW we had many other cats at the time). Then, finally she would stay in the open and get on top of the bed but was still shy and somewhat scared, one day I was laying on the bed beside her and accidentally bumped my arm into her, she FREAKED out and started to run across me and scratched my stomach which left a scar that my doctor thought was surgical!! But anyway it took her a full year to be comfortable around the rest of my family and pets.. She was already old so, I only had her for a few years.. Was one of my favorite cats out of the hundreds we had lol

You've received some great advice so far. I actually think your female cat is smart; I'm not fixed but have no use for male "cats". JUSKIDDING! !!

On a serious note, I can't stress enough how much patience plays a role with ferals. As previous members have stated, it can take months or even a year for a feral cat to trust. Or they may never. Calm persistance, and a quiet voice in addition to gradually placing food a little bit closer to the house may help.

Kitty likely has come from a long line of ferals so it makes sense he doesn't trust.

This is the reason it's so important for folks to spay and neuter...100's upon 1000's of litters of kitties whose lifespan is very short.

Good luck!

When we moved here to Fl we had 8 cats to take with us. 5 were our house cats and the 3 feral cats. Something must have clicked because they all became best friends in the truck on the 24 hour trip. When we put them in this house they all ran into one of the bedrooms. Cats are funny when it comes to change, even simple things like moving the furniture around, replacing something like a rug, they get freaked out but get accustom to it eventually. They are not like dogs that could give a rats behind as long as they have food and a place to rest their heads and some company! :D
