The internet is changing society in interesting ways due to its anonymous nature. The way many people talk on the internet is truly divergent from the way they talk face to face in normal polite society. It's like the internal dialog we all have with nastiness and brashness that we would never vocalize out of basic common decency and politeness is rampant on the internet where we can hide behind avatars and handles. The fascinating thing is that through years of internet use this same lack of respect for others is starting to be mimicked in real life and lack of tolerance for anything is becoming more pronounced.
Say goodbye to a genteel society. And because of the scope of the internet, this change is world wide. It's not just a small geographic area.
It's also interesting that a forum that tries to maintain basic civil discourse (like ECF) is denigrated and eschewed by a great many that believe this is a problem that shouldn't be allowed to continue. Of course, there are enough of us left that believe anything can be said and arguments can be engaged in with wit and intelligence without resorting to verbal challenge and anger that places like ECF are still preferred venues for discussion. But I do wonder how long this will last given the internet mentality trend I see pervading society. I'll just enjoy it while I can and resist the temptation to engage in internet douchebaggery until it becomes the normal way of conversation. And it will, eventually I suppose.
Trust me as a gamer and someone who frequents those types of forums I get it I really do. I have seen people threaten others lives over what console they prefer (whether there is any merit to it) which is why this slippery slope I see this forum on bothers me to no end. But this is what we're faced with and will see where it goes.
