Allowing this feature to be turned off for a member because someone does not agree with their opinion should not be allowed. If you Disagree with posts someone decides it is abusing the system is very biased and is just not right.
I bore the brunt of your disagree streak last night, but... I actually agree with you on this.

I think it was the "going back through historical posts" and doing it en mass that brought the administrative ire on you. Doing 35 of them in a 10 minute period towards one person appeared "vengeful" for lack of a better word.

I have no problem with you, or anyone else disagreeing with me, and thats what the emoji is for. Perhaps if you kept it to current posts in realtime it wouldnt appear abusive.

I disagree with your thread and was voicing my opinion by using the system since I am prohibited from expressing my opinion in the thread. So you are saying you complained about someone rating you comments? I received plenty of likes when someone reads older posts and have received a few that disagreed which they are allowed to do. Should not be allowed to restrict someones opinion.

Lets make this clear, "I" never complained, I thought it was funny actually.

My comment above was simply trying to share an alternative way of going about things that might not get you in trouble.

Now, if you want to get into this deeper "with me" lets take it offline to PMs.......

I just want to add that I think the disagreement button is... contentious. I personally don't mind it and may have used it a grand total of two times (and it was a genuine disagree, not anything mean, or targeting someone) but in those cases, I usually follow up with a post stating the reasons for my disagreement. I don't think there is a reason NOT to have disagreements on a forum, and I don't see it as inherently negative, but I think there are members that do, or that worry about getting it, and I think it's.... more polite? To disagree within a post where reason and rationale can be given....

I just think it's going to be contentious and then something the mods will have to mop up, anyway. Not everyone is going to enjoy the red X, and I think posting about a disagreement is more useful than rating it, in any case (which I'm going to do anyway) I have stopped using the X for THAT reason, because I know it IS upsetting to some, though I personally thing a little disagreement is a good thing. If I was constantly bombarded with Xs though, I don't think I'd enjoy that either. There are also members using it in jest, which sort of muddies the waters as well.

Just my .02.

Let's put this damned thing to rest. As Mike said, he did not complain. I happened to be in the thread while this whole mess was going on. Here is MY post: Deeming Regulations have been released!!!!

Further into the thread: Deeming Regulations have been released!!!!

And this IS the reason. I take full responsibility.

If you would like to continue this conversation, please PM me.

I'll also add that the disagree's were being thrown out there in lieu of posts that were previously deleted. Not only is this abuse of the rating system, it's also akin to reposting comments that were deleted in the first place.

If you feel that is your place to do so then feel free. But you are going off topic and if I could I would disagree.

Enough. There will be no further complaining about actions that were taken. That, too, is against the rules and quite frankly I've had it up to "here" with it.

Exactly.
And I will add that this was a unanimous decision with all staff that were on at the time.

IDK, I don't mind the disagree in its current form. It's not really like a downvote on say Reddit, which I hate. But I've been on other forums with a disagree, and like you @mikepetro once in a while you get a fan who hits all your posts. I'm with you, I find it funny. I will admit I remember I made one post which I really thought was not at all contentious, and I had like 60 disagrees within a day. I thought the torches and pitchforks were going to be outside that night.

Given that here you can even see who's disagreeing with you (unlike that other forum, which was not a vaping one anyway) it's far less open to abuse, and can be a way of commenting along a thread that's not confrontational and without a drama of 3 pages of posts devoted to "I'm right! No, I'm right". Now you can disagree and just move on.

I have to disagree with you on this point. IF someone disagrees with a particular post, I honestly and truly want to know why. Was it bad information? Was it illinformed? Was it dangerous advice? OR, was it simply a way to say "I dont like you"

I learn from two people with differing opinions, I am likely to sit through three pages of no I'm right, in order to better understand 1) what the disagreement was over, was it a misunderstanding of wording? Or something more serious? 2) To better understand the topic as a whole.. even if I agree with one side, perhaps there was something I missed? Perhaps I was the one misunderstanding the wording, and going forth using similarly incorrect wording.. and 3) just a better understanding as a whole. With no counter, I might not have as full a grasp on the topic as I could have.. areas unthought of or unexplored. In short, I learn.

In conclusion, I find it cowardly, extremely unhelpful and flat out backstabbing to disagree and walk away without clearing up as to why that was. Its unhelpful both to the poster, and to the community at large which sometimes does just read and desire that better understanding. It leaves people hanging on a nagging thought, what bit of knowledge have I missed? Even if they are in agreement with the post in question.

I feel sorry for the Mods. While this new Like system is nice, it is going to be the source of contention for a while, and its the poor Mods that will feel the added stress.

I think the "Red X" is good, but it would also be really nice if the users were "required" to give a reason why. If you X somebody you get prompted to enter reason, just a mandatory short single sentence. That would help keep things in perspective and context. It might also curb the "hit & run" tactics.

I know this would be "custom" code, and custom is a PITA to maintain through the updates etc. But it sure would be nice.

Or, the use of dislike without posting a reason as to why results in a 24 hour banishment from ECF.

Sounds good, but that is additional load on the mods as I dont know how you could automate it.

Perhaps if you use the "X" it automatically brings up a "reply to post" dialogue, if the character count in the reply is too short the X is rejected.

That may be possible to do, and failure to post something also negates the "X".

If you are going to insist on a statement to disagree then you might as well eliminate the red X. If someone wants to disagree with a post let them disagree with a post. Many will want to shy away from possible confrontation, hence the safety of the X.
