Matt: Hold off on the Gen. I don't think this will be a bad storm. I wouldn't expect this to be able to knock out power for long. Fl. power company's are geared to handle these storms. And what's wrong with candles?
I helped expecting no return ,Hope she got home and all's good. and Roto, if you think your getting outta a crazy helo ride, Wrong! I fully want to see you at the odyssey iffin I can drive over there. And malathoin plus a good crossbow will take care of vampires. Eat lots o garlic!

I'm sitting in the living room watching the biggest thunderstorm we've had since I've been here. Pretty cool. Hurricanes coming by Monday I do believe. Hopefully not too strong. They say it's going to be a category 1 and by the predicted path it's going to run right over us. I don't worry to much about them this early usually but, they've been getting better at it these days. Debating whether to buy a generator or not. I have one back in Virginia but, it's not a real big one and barely powers the refrigerator and TV. Of course it's doesn't help me now either. We'll see. Momma doesn't want to spend the money but, I don't want to sit in the dark. After 20 years in the Navy my attitude is "plan for the worst and hope for the best." Doree doesn't agree. Oh well.

Also....better safe than sorry! Hopefully it's not, but it could be worse than just sitting in the dark!

Also in this discussion don't forget I can just get in the car and go back to Virginia.

Ummm, I'm willing to bet VA gets more rain than FL from Erika.

Keep in mind, that the stronger she gets, the earlier the northern swing. BUT, if she has the same resilience as Danny did and slips south into the GOM (highly unlikely), I could be in some serious doo-doo.

Regardless, come any June, have your 'cane supplies ready!!!

So you folks 'knowledgeable' about generators. What do you look for when purchasing one? What names/brands are good ones. Do you have 'em hooked up to you house wiring with the cutover switching and all? Or do you just run heavy duty extension cords to you appliances?

It's not common in our area for extended power outages ... but the last couple few years we have had bad outages in areas around/close to us that were out for up to a week. Makes one wonder about getting something.

Not "that" knowledgabubble but I just went with engine. Honestly don't remember what brand the gen is outside of 7500w. Also don't feel like headin out to da shed to check it. :)

Now the furnace and the sump pump are on a switch with a line running outside. If power dies, just throw a switch (just a lite switch actually) and it takes it off the grid and plug it into the gen. Then anything else that needs it gets an extension cord.

Going to Florida during hurricane season, should have found room for it in your car ;) (yea, right!) We have 4, I'd loan ya one but we are in Kentucky!
There was barely room for us in the car what with that cat crate and the lap dog (she rides in the passenger's lap) plus all the other crapola, nope, no generator. There is a 500 watt inverter built into the car though, don't think it'll run the refrigerator though.

Wish I could tell you, but I can't. My father has a fancy shmancy setup where his automatically kicks in if the power goes out. I'm pretty sure it's wired into his system. It runs on gas, and I think it self tests every 6 months? I'm not sure. I'd have to ask him. It wasn't cheap.

If I had the money and we had natural gas here I wouldn't hesitate to buy a standby generator. The two most common are Generac and Kohler. Either reviews well. If you were to have something in the 16 to 17 kw range installed (around 5 to 5500 bucks) you could act like nothing happened after about 10 seconds of being.in the dark. One of those would probably run everything in your house, central a/c and furnace included.

That price is if you do the install yourself. Add a grand or so if you have it done. If you lose power for a week or so when it's 10 below you won't regret it. With the condition of the National electrical grid I don't think I would live someplace without one these day. I know I'm putting one in here if I can get 500 gallon propane tank installed. Gotta ask the homeowners association according to the Covenants. I hate that Crap! And no I really don't want to live here. No choice at the moment. Don't forget I'm moving a 3 br, 2 1/2 bath with 2 car garage into a 2br,2ba townhouse with a f...ing homeowners association.

I know I've been scarce, but right now life away from the computer has me ripping and running. Once again, I need to go back to work to get some rest.

Debadoo, I'm glad your son's surgery turned out well. May he recover quickly and fully.

Welcome Newcomers! I think you'll like it here. Hell, they let ME in!

I almost went to the HO last night so y'all could see what I look like after I finish mowing the lawn. I had on a bandanna with one of those old fashioned lady gardening hats with the large brim. I thought I looked pretty funny. OH well, maybe next time. The computer has been giving me hell with my video driver and what not. I'm sure it's fixable, but I just haven't gotten around to it. I've been thinking of a new one, however, I don't know how much longer I'll have a job.

Yep, the oil and gas industry is floundering right now, and all service industries associated with it. I was in a meeting on Friday, and they told us that right now they're not trying to lay anybody off. However, if the price of oil slips any further, all bets are off. I truly don't know how much longer I'll be at my base, since the company we are contracted out to is at serious risk of bankruptcy. If that happens, they may make a place for me at headquarters, like they may not.

Now, as much as I'd like to retire, I really can't right now. So, we shall see. The funny thing about all of this is that I'm not really worried about what could happen. The good Lord has seen me through this many years, I have faith he'll keep me going some kind of way. I just mostly live on a one-day-at-a-time basis. I could drop dead tomorrow, and it wouldn't matter anyway. :)
Roto, it would matter to us!

Well I just got to do the Knight in armor bit. Young lady ran outta gas in my front yard with 2 po'd kids and a dead cell. Brought out the mower gas , cell phone an an umbrella.(it was pouring rain).Got the best part of 5 gal o gas in her tank, let her call her dad and kept her dry, ish. I was at least worth the air I breathed today by helping Her and the kids out. Chivalry is not dead, just wounded! "MEDIC"
Good for you! That was such a "right thing" to do! Sadly, so rare these days.
