... build a wheelchair ramp so I can bring the wife unit home.

Since there is only a two inch rise from our sidewalk to the front porch and another four inches up to the front door threshold, I got by with one sheet of 3/4 inch exterior treated plywood and two four foot 2x4s under bracing. The eight foot plywood length provided a perfect ramp traversing both 'steps' without any cuts. A lil' outdoor carpet and a roll of carpet tape finished the ramp nicely.

Had no need for hand rails in that Patty uses only her scooter when we leave the homestead.

Hopefully your project will be as easy. Good luck!

A tornado just passed a mile or so north of us, damn sirens, don't they know im sleeping?

Last stinkie 10/15/2013
oh wow, hope you and all those experiencing/expecting bad weather stay safe!! Our "storm" finally arrived about 5:15 this am, lasted a few hours, but was just a bit of wind, not bad, and a somewhat heavy steady rain. No biggie.

Note to self: Be sure when you grab a tissue to blow your nose that you do not grab the one that had be used to wipe up eliquid messes.
yipes. lol Been there, you're not alone.

What about going to supper and looking down and you are wearing two different tennis shoes? Just wondering. . . yes I've done that too
newp......of course, don't think I've ever had more than one pr of sneakers at the same time. I did put on two different shoes one mornin, but managed to catch it before I left the house. Not sure how many times I made it either nearly out the door or even in the car before I realized I still had my slippers on. thank God, I never actually got to work like that!

I actually slept last night! Needed it after the weekend with the Boy Dog. It knocked all the pain back enough that I didn't wake up everytime I moved. I handle the injections so much better than the pills & IV's.
Wahooooooooooo!!!!!

He's tried a pen mod, but again, the small tank is a nuisance, so I was thinking at least a 5 ml like my Nauti Aspire. And some DIY supplies. Maybe some pg and vg, nic base, recipes and flavors. I might even mix some up in strengths that might be appropriate for them both.
So great you're able and willing to help them!

Back from the doc. Still cancer free. Great news but, I kind of knew. Wasn't worried at all. Thanks for the prayers though, can never hurt.
Wahoooooo!!! So glad to hear that!!

well had my first linux crash power blipped and cpu wouldnt boot to desktop anymore :(
yipes. Is this easily fixable, or dead for good unless you mostly rebuild it? Glad you had the laptop!

This rain keeps coming up from the South. It has the whole Mississippi River valley covered. I think it is going to be at least twelve hours of continuous rainfall.
oh dang hun, hope you're on high ground!

It's kind of amazing the thought process that you go through when you drop something and your foot is underneath.
I run more on just pure instinct. I could drop a feather, it doesn't matter, the instinctual response is to squeal and jump.
Although, while squealing and jumping...the thoughts of ... geeze that was dumb, that (whatever it was) wouldn't hurt you anyhow....and....jup, ya jumped again dumb azzz ya gotta quit doin that cuz ya know you usually jerk your back when you do.........do occur!!

Things are repaired and power is back on now but the worst of the storms are yet to hit. A Lot of water with this storm.
Glad the power is back on, and hope it stays that way! Really hope you're over your cold quickly, and the weather isn't too bad for ya.

Kinda proud of selph in dat I've restrained selph from purchasing sum really kewl ancillary stuphph (ie EphPV) and modiphication parts. Will wait 'til I get my 'pheet' ophph da ground.
Fixed that for ya! ;)

Sheesh! Yep, you'd be the one making the evening news - Man Sleeps Through Tornado, Wakes Up In Bucksnort, TN.

We have discussed Vax-D therapy, which scientifically makes a whole lot of sense to me. However, my insurance company won't cover it, which is really vexing me. How in the hell can they pay for invasive surgery, which costs a hell of a lot more, with more down time, and not pay for a procedure which is non-invasive and very little down time?????? We're working on that.
kewl, had never heard of that, but it drives me batty that they won't pay for certain things that work, are easier on the pt and cost less! Oh heck no, let's not do that! Hope they can get approval for ya! And sometimes that's what it takes, is a doc jumpin through an extra hoop or two and they'll approve it. I'm going through that now with a particular medication.

Well gotta hit the sack.
Have to go and get some plywood and stuff first thing in the morning and build a wheelchair ramp so I can bring the wife unit home.
Still moving some furniture and such around too.
oh wow......great she's nearly home! glad you know how to do that, but hope some help will show up for you!

The link for the hangout is Sign in - Google Accounts Just need a google account, or maybe google plus, not sure about that, and a microphone of some sort. You can be on camera or just use an avatar, whichever you prefer. Hope you'll join us there!!

Nothing... if you do it in your own toilet.that's what I'm going to have done and I don't care which family member flushes...just as long as they do! I'm going to be cremated, tho I've tried to convince family members to just not claim my remains,
but if that happens, then i wanna be flushed...so i can thumb my nose and /or give the middle finger to all the vultures that swarm around when someone passes on.

My GD's need the little money that will be available, not some strangers. Oh..the only other thing I want them to do is have a Bon Voyage party with LOTSA Elvis music of course:D...and pizza...and pop....

I've told them that I WILL be watchin' so they better do it right.
My Wife didn't want any money spent on a funeral or anything. She wanted to be cremated and her ashes spread somewhere. She wasn't picky. When she passed I was making arrangements with our Priest and that was when I found out that being Catholic the ashes had to be buried. Major change of plans. Oh well, I found a nice place for her and guess when I go, she can let me hear all about it. One nice thing, and I let my daughter know, is that I can be placed in the same plot as her and a new marker with both our names can be added. I had always thought that I would like my ashes sprinkled around Wal-Mart. That way my family would visit once in a while.
Welcome, Liz W. enjoy the porches. Regardless what you may think some of us won't bite.

Good morning everyone. Up early this A.M., really early. Something woke me around 1 and that was it. Here I be.
Kay was talking about funeral vultures, we went to make arrangements for my mother in law, advance planning she's still with us, and I couldn't believe the costs. She absolutely didn't want to be cremated so we went as cheap as absolutely possible. After all she'll be gone and all that's left is a husk that held the soul. Still an outrageous amount of money. No service, no graveside and the cheapest coffin they had and it was still over 3 grand. Oh, something you should be aware of. You do not have to be embalmed. As far as I can see if you're not getting cremated it really is just an added cost. Another boat payment for the funeral dude. What possible use is it? Unless you're going the whole deal with a viewing and open casket funeral and all that. Even the caskets are hermetically sealed. And in Florida that stupid concrete vault that they put in the grave isn't required either. Don't mean to be disrespectful of anyone but I consider it tips on how to save money. The funeral business is a huge rip off. When my father passed we had him cremated and since he already had a plot, buried. The VA will supply a headstone for a vet free of charge. Then we took his portrait and placed it on the alter in the church. All his friend got up and spoke telling funny stories and a little bit about how he touched their lives and then we proceeded to the house and had a knock down wake party that will not soon be forgotten. The cops only came once when my sister in law got so stewed she went out and danced naked in the front yard. Typical Daytona Beach wake.:lol:

On the subject of wheelchair ramps. When My brother in law built ours he made a mistake that might be worth avoiding.

He built one from inside the house down to the porch. The porch however is short enough that if you do not control speed going down that ramp well enough you will keep going straight off the end of it instead of making the turn to go tot he other end where the other ramp is. It would have been far better to have one LONG ramp straight down from the doorway to the parking area. Particularly if the person in the chair wishes for a bit of independence getting in and out of the house (or in case of emergency and they need to get out without help).

Also make sure there is a ramp on the back door too. 2nd avenue of escape in case of fire or other emergency.

My mother set up her funeral arrangements years before her death. Because we are wide-spread, she arranged to be cremated. She had Alzheimer's and severe heart disease. She was taken off the meds, transferred to skilled nursing, and my sister's dog died, all within the same few weeks. The stresses were too much for her. When she was cremated, my sister (the funeral director is a childhood friend) asked me if I wanted some of her ashes. I just about had a hissy-fit, and the priest agreed, more gently. She then asked-- hesitantly-- if some of the dog's ashes could be mixed with hers. I thought that would be great.

The after-funeral family gathering (at the VFW-- my parents' date-place) was great-- Dad's family was there in large numbers because their town was having a community shindig.

It went very well! Only 3 sticks to get all the blood, & the steroid injection. And a new source of infusion funding at 100% that will allow me as many infusions as I need for a year, instead of funding limiting me to 2. All I have to do is take my proof of SS income per month & she'll get it started for me.

I'm so glad to hear you got it all worked out!!!! What a relief!

Back from the doc. Still cancer free. Great news but, I kind of knew. Wasn't worried at all. Thanks for the prayers though, can never hurt.

AWESOME news Mattman!!!!

all the funeral talk reminded me of another one of the quotes I lost the other day. Forget who said it, but wanted you to know you weren't alone....GMTA..... when my son deployed in 06, we of course had to talk about what he wanted done should the worst come to pass, and we also talked of what I wanted done. I'm with Matt, I personally hate spending a ton on funerals, and my personal beliefs are that I aint gonna know nuttin about what you do, and if I somehow manage to know what's going on.....I'll be with the Lord, and won't care. So I told him to do whatever he needed to do to help himself with the grieving process....but as far as I was concerned, if they'd ever pass a law letting him do it.....he could put me in a Hefty bag and set me out to the curb!!

Well darlings I am heading back to bed. I am only managing about an hour awake at a time at this point. Then my strength is just gone. Have fun everyone.

Nite sweetie.....hope you're soon much much better. Hope you rest well.

I have three discs that are bulging. Two of them are very minor, and one is bulging enough to press on the nerve, hence the numb hand. Plus I need to talk to my primary care physician about this nodule on my thyroid. Some more cacala!!
Debra, no one can seem to explain the logic, or none thereof, of the insurance companies.

With your doctor interceding for you, it could well turn out that your procedures will be covered.......saying some prayers that is the case.

I've read through most of the posts this morning, and wanted to respond with more personals, but have to get going into the RW.

I think what Matt was saying is that there's no need for embalming in either the case of cremation or the case of immediate burial.

Mom and Dad were both cremated, with ashes sprinkled instead of buried. I still have covered crystal dish with some of Dad's in it that I scooped out of the box of cremains when they arrived. That's my preference as well. No funeral home service and no gd preacher of any kind, but spend a little on good catering!

I dunno. If this ain't real life, I'd really rather not have it pointed out. The nothing I've got to do is just as good as the something you've got to do.

LOL Bells - I know just what you mean... But, most of our friends think that retirement means you have nothing to do with your time anymore and that you can jump when they mention something...
