Amtrak derailment in your neck of the woods, Legs, near Olympia.

Nope, he's on the other end of the State. It's about 20 miles or so from me, though.

Local news has been nothing but, since. Inaugural run of a new high speed (for the US) commuter train (Seattle to Portland), most cars off the tracks, a couple upside down on the interstate below. Said to have been 70 passengers (no mention of crew!), 3 fatalities reported atm, none from the cars and one semi hit on the highway, all from the train. So far, other than those 3, most of the injured are at least walking wounded.

Jeez they had an Amtrak derailment south of Tacoma this morning with several fatalities, don't know how many yet several of the cars ended up on I5. This was on a new route that they opened today first train over it. Crushed a couple cars and a semi on the freeway. Dang

Yep I was just watching a video of it. Not sure of the new route tho. I used to run on those tracks. They said 77 taken to hospitals all were from the train, they didn't think anyone was hurt badly on the freeway.

From what I can see in the pictures is the lead engine and one car made it over but the rear engine is on the Freeway. Those Sounder trains have an engine on each end so when they get to their destination they are able to give it a quick cleaning and head back. Both engines are working the rear one I believe is remote controlled and should be doing exactly what the head one is doing. On the Sounder it could be different but thats how they work on a freight. I would just about guess that since this was an innagural run there was RR officials on the train and in the engine with the Engineer so that will be in his favor. But who knows at this point.

I am just guessing but if that is southbound I5 the train was headed south to Portland. Not a very good innaugural run. Also they are saying the train was probably at its max speed for those tracks which is 79mph but I really doubt that was the speed there considering the curve he is starting into. 79 is usually on straight track.

There is very little chance the train was doing 79mph on a curve like what the lead engine is entering. They have trains that will go faster on the curves called Talgo which is a train car designed in Spain that actually moves on the trucks to allow for higher speeds but the speed board reflects that by showing something like F-45 P-50 T-60 but those are not Talgo cars.

I know nothing about Talgo cars, but....the cars used on this train were supposed to be some kind of new car that can lean into curves allowing them to go faster....is that what the Talgo cars do?

They did look very similar to Talgo type coaching stock, from what was being said over here, it was the 1st passenger carrying stock to go over that new piece of track, and they are saying it was travelling at 80-81 mph, but our news sources quite often get things wrong in the early stages.
