There are a few that advertise reduced salt, but I always wonder if they replaced it with something worse than salt...
If you're accustomed to salted foods and you try reduced salt versions, you will not like them. They will taste bland, and it will be pretty obvious to you that no attempt has been made to "replace" the formerly added salt with anything at all.

We do have a good fire dept system here because we vote it in same with the school system but as far as county we barely exist.
Glad you have a good fire dept. That's what I was worried about while reading that! They can also offer emerg medical when they get there, while waiting for ambulance. We have several rural areas here, that all the area fire depts think those folks belong on someone else's service. Burnt to the ground before they figger out or give a crap about who shoulda gone.

It was the neighbor's father who lived with them. Such a nice guy. I felt so bad for the 2 grandkids because they were so close, but he's been pretty sick for the past year. The family has strong faith though and I'm sure they'll be fine.
oh my heart goes out to them! Glad they have a strong faith though. With him having been sick awhile that makes a big difference.

Your's is around the corner too Birthday buddy! Early :bday: to you to!
Ok.......need to know the dates for @misswish1 and all those in October. Finally got a good desktop calendar reminder thingy on Sterno's recommendation so I need to enter them please

Kleen'd dem 4 ya.
great job! Nice deer pic Dave!

I volunteered for two hours this morning to work at a voter registration table at the public library in the Big City (Rocky Mount NC, 12 miles south of me).
oh kewl. I had to become a registrar years ago when I was an eligibility specialist for a county health program. The folks who used our service were unlikely to ever go register so they figured if they had to come see us, that it would be good for us to be able to register them. Signed a few up, but not that many. I used to do a lot of volunteer work to include running a food pantry. Found out you really can get 1,100 pounds of food into a 91 plymouth acclaim when the guy who says go ahead with a huge order, I'll bring my truck to pick it up, flakes out on ya! :D

Thanks everyone! Mom is doing much better. She's never had any heart problems, out of nowhere she's in congestive heart failure. She's eating again and getting a little strength back. She is 86, so I know there will be health issues, I'm just not ready for them! It's been a tough summer with
medical stuff. Told hubby & SIL that they are not allowed to get sick!
(((((((MW)))))))))) as others have said, she can live quite awhile with that if she's careful and it's not horribly severe. When my ex FIL had it, we were checking out all the things that had a ton of salt, and of course prepackaged and canned foods, but one of the biggest shockers was the huge amt of salt in tap water! You can get a report on yours. We had to buy bottled water 5 gal bottles with dispenser (and be careful many of those also have a lot of salt) to make coffee, cooking etc plus drinking it. I think he even brushed his teeth with it.

My Mom has developed that also, h has been living with it for years. Had an Uncle pass a year ago from it, but he lived alone & didn't follow Dr instructions. My mothers youngest sister is in the hospital right now. Cancer, congestive heart failure, alzhiemer's, & sepsis. Dr says she will probably pass any minute.
(((((Kenna))))) so sorry bout your Aunt. Not to mitigate human family members, but I've been meaning to ask. How are Sarah and Brutus?

We are safely in Naperville, Il, a western suburb of Chicago. This is part of my childhood stomping grounds - sure has changed in 45-50 years! Driving north we passed so many caravans of tree and electric company trucks heading south I lost count. My Sgt First Class Florida National Guard son's troops are all deployed and on standby for orders on where to report for duty to help.
awwwwww how nice to be able to visit yur old stompin grounds. Hope your son stays safe!

I'm far enough away that I should see minimal damage, but if it swings around and takes a second pass next week, I'm seriously thinking of taking a trip. :)
That second pic of the eye doesn't look like your far enough away. Stay safe darlin! And your welcome to head to Texas for that trip if it does swing back around. I think I owe you a lunch anyhow! hehehe

@Kenna if you haven't watched it yet and have Netflix you need to watch Call the Midwife there are 5 Seasons now and I'm sure you would like it. I just can't believe it takes place in the 60's in England. Seems like things were so different and wonder if they were that way here and I didn't notice it.
I started watching I think the first two seasons of that a long time........also London Hospital (but that was on amazon) but got away from it. It was pretty good. Not the best I'd seen, but worth a watch.
I'm not good at saying the right things at these moments.

Much better than microwave or boiled. I think because the spices get steamed into the food.
that's exactly why. Nice price on that. We have one of these. Nice big steamer rack in it.

Yeah I'm south of Ken A, gettin my .... kicked by Matthew. I'll be up all nite.
Good to see you!!! Hope you come back and chat with us!!! Hope y'all stay safe!! @runamok

Jup I've wondered about that too, but as dave said, don't taste like it. But reduced and fat/salt etc free, doesn't mean it's not in there. Just that they've gotten enough below a certain percentage to say reduced or free.

For those trying to stay away from canned veggies, try frozen. To me they taste soooooooooo much better and much less salt. I use very little in the way of canned goods. Mostly tomato products and beans. If I could get my freezer over here, I wouldn't even use beans. Would cook em myself, package em up and freeze em.

Regarding the chili flakes I made out of old dried New Mexico peppers: after using a really generous amount on a sandwich, I'm throwing the rest of it out. Life's too short to deal with mediocre taste. Next time I'll do something with them sooner than 2 years after purchase.
I think if you make the flakes when the peppers are fresher you'll have better results. :p My BIL made some red pepper flakes out of red peppers. I still have them, and they're still very flavorful. Of course, his peppers were straight out of the garden.

My mothers youngest sister is in the hospital right now. Cancer, congestive heart failure, alzhiemer's, & sepsis. Dr says she will probably pass any minute.
Ohhhh! Kenna, I'm sorry to hear about your aunt!

Welcome home, honey! Tell me all about your day.
Welp, Thursdays are pretty much a bust for me. I get in during the wee hours of the morning. If I'm not too tired, I do laundry, and then I pass out for a few hours. Then I get up, eat and lounge. I'm pretty useless on my first day back home.

You'd swear that I live in Florida the way I've been watching Hurricane Matthew. Having lived through quite a few of those myself, I'm very concerned about our porchers that are in that area.

On another note, I dragged my tailbone out of bed this morning to go down and have blood work done since I have an appointment on Tuesday. I fasted and was up at 4:30 am to be there by 6am. We do all the preliminary work only to find out the doctor didn't leave any lab orders. :-x I just had to laugh about it. At least it forced me to roll out of bed and get moving for the day. I usually can't roll out of bed before 10 or 11 am when I am home. So, here it is 9:30 am, and all my errands are done and the bills are paid. However, I'd be willing to be by 1pm, it will be nap time. :D

Hey all,
We're hunkered down w/son & family. 8 of us here and so far, so good. Had mandatory evac; strange feeling to have to leave our home, but we did what was necessary to be safe. Goodness knows what we'll find when we get home, but that is secondary right now.

Just heard from Matt and he & Doree are in a campground in Gaffney SC and will head out tomorrow.
They are OK, too! Thank God!!!

Yeah thats the Fire Dept about 15 miles down the road their motto "The foundation savers"
But 1 thing to be said for them is that many of their customers are up in the surrounding hills, Most have electric and water and even some have phones but they are 5-10 miles up dirt roads. We has some friends up there that lived in a house that was a burme house carved into the hill. It was cool and well insulated. Wood was only heat and a dug well. Pretty rustic.

That is had a friend up there. One morning he woke up and really felt bad so he decides to drive himself to the doctor 25 or 30 miles. His neighbor came accross his car and he was in bad shape with a bloody nose so she got him in her car but before she could get him to the hospital he died of a brain aneurysm. She just disappeared, I'm sure that his and her family tried to get everything they could out of them. He had about 60 acres left and money and other property she was kind of simple and I'm sure the families took all they could. She wasn''t well either and would have 5or 6 seizures a day most small occasionally really bad.

Well, so far I've been right about the minimal damage. Back-door neighbor's 23 year old fence is blowing down a section at a time from the 70 mph gusts of wind.
One section of 3 panels tipped into my screened in area, and we took 15 minutes to flip it the other way so it wouldn't rip through... Poor lady has been trying to save up enough to replace it for the past 3 years. I even told her I would pay half of the side that is between our properties... Now she HAS to get a new one installed. Another 8 foot panel just dropped

I just noticed! My trash tray was in the background full of cotton! LOL! Why I still have an ash tray you ask? To serve as a reminder of why I quit smoking. I keep it packed with scrap wire, cotton, and of course, use it as a receptacle for all other nasty things. It keeps my feet free from kicking over the garbage can I used to have sitting next to me. I usually use it to catch wire clipping and cotton shavings when I'm building. And of course the occasional mesh trimmings when I'm burning in mesh, rolling a new mesh wick, or just trimming down the loose mesh wires. Saves my poor feet from getting kanthal, nichrome, nickel, stainless steel, or titanium stuck in the bottoms of my boots or bare feet!

So glad to hear you and matta and doree are well. Sorry you had to evacuate. Was just wondering about you when I saw on noon news it was hitting Jacksonville. Ken, glad to know y'all aren't getting horrible damage. Have been wondering about Susan through all this.

I can't recall......didn't have homeowners when I lived in Galveston. Will the insurance help her at all with the fence? Or do they just say act of God and wash their hands of it?

Speaking of steamed food, here's a ground turkey burger with maters and steamed onion. I quartered the onion along the top to bottom axis and steamed it in a pressure cooker for around 15 minutes. If you like it less mooshy, steam for a shorter time of course, but I like it this soft and tender. Basically the same as sauteed, but easier to do and no oil or butter needed. When quartered instead of sliced, the natural layers of the onion just peel apart and easily lay flat.

If you do your research - they claim that frozen veggies are better than fresh. Frozen veggies are allowed to ripen further than what is sold in the stores as fresh. Frozen veggies are frozen within a few hours of picking. Fresh veggies are picked early so that they can still look fresh when you buy them in the store and in some cases - fresh veggies are sprayed to keep them fresh longer - do not know what they spray them with...
