just a pair of front struts and shocks on a 2001 Yukon I had years ago ran $800, and that was in 2006 ..

Yeah... I shouldn't have said 'complete' frontend job... shocks can get pretty spendy depending on brand, quality, and where you buy 'em... (and didn't know a Tahoe had struts) I was just talking about the linkage and bushings and whatnot.

Well new stuph haz more computers than IBM. And that'z a problem (to me). Had a 90 caprice 5 liter. 25mpg. The new van, 3.8 liter. 23mpg.

To a point, the older the better for me too. I have a '94 Lincoln Mk8 w/ 4.6 liter that my son and I refurbed that gets 28+ highway!

That booger will scat too!... Not so great from a dead start, but floor it at about 50-60mph - and hold on baby!

Kinda makes you wonder. If emission controls make you burn more gas, is there really a difference in the long run?
Engines (generally) have gotten a lot smaller over the years. But gas mileage really hasn't changed much. In fact it's worse in some cases. So if you have to use more gas to go the same distance... are total emissions actually lower?

These days, if someone is a younger person (younger than me, anyway) .. the sheer wealth of DIY material that's on YouTube can and does provide the ability to save a lot of money .. if someone is so inclined .. when my 2011 Avalanche had the computer essentially fail in Nashville back in April, had I been home, I likely would have at least looked into or considered replacing it myself and saving some money ..

Back in June, a few of the dash gauges started to read wrong, likely a problem that started with the Nashville issue and finally caught up .. I watched a few YouTubes on gauge replacement, ordered the parts for around $40.00, took out the instrument cluster and repaired it myself .. my local Chevy dealer wanted $900.00, and I'm nearly a 30 year customer .. at that point, I thought seriously about starting a side business repairing gauges ..

I have stuck with Tahoe/Yukon/Avalanche for all these years because they are generally robust, comfortable and safe on the road and with reasonable care and maintenance will reliably go 200K plus .. as well as having years of proven mechanical ability .. of course, you don't own one for the gas mileage .. ;) .. that 5.3 liter / 323 Cubic Inch motor has been around a long time ..
My Suburban was +200K when I traded it for this one. It had 34K on it when I bought it, it was just out of warranty.

But that's the thing - sometimes you just KNOW what's wrong. A friend of mine called about a month ago and asked: "Weaver, bud, so I got this problem right? I just built a new computer, now the CD-Rom drives wont operate, and when the system goes into hibernation it doesn't come out." So I asked him a bit about his build - one thing in particular - TOTAL Power Supply Unit (PSU) OUTPUT - his response 500 Watts. His graphics card alone pulled OVER 500W IDLE! Told him to run back to the store - grab a good 1000W or higher PSU, hook it up, start the machine, see how it responds then - guess what? All of his equipment works, when his PC goes into standby, it comes out of standby, and he can use all the hardware to its full potential. So... I guess it depends on what you refer to when you say "Armchair mechanics". Do I suggest taking it in to someone who might know something more than I do? Sure - but only if I don't have a clue what I'm talking about. For cars - I can change the oil, the brakes, the rotors, a starter, a battery, an alternator, a head gasket, a transmission pan / pan gasket, and give my car a tuneup. But I can do it on MY VEHICLE ONLY! Why on MY VEHICLE ONLY? Because it's my vehicle - I know it about as well as I knew my rifle in the Marine Corps. Funny huh?

Prayers in the air, Brother! Y'all be careful on the road, okay? I know y'all may be in a hurry to get there, and that's completely understandable, but don't push yourself too far or too hard. Luv ya, man, and thoughts and prayers are with ya. :)

Flight before the heavy mist burned off this morning, trying a couple different white balance and color settings.

Nice. Also enjoy anything by Jethro Tull. Saw them at Nashville's Municipal Auditorium back in the stone ages. They did a 20-minute version of "Thick As a Brick." Ian Anderson said it was designed to have you squirming in your seat. It did.

In England they have cars that get over 50mpg , but top end is near 80.

Yeah. Agreed. Here too. BUT miniscule engine as well, therefore... teeny car. Not that bigger is better... (well, IMHO, yeah. It is!) but point being, would no emissions make any difference if mileage came up without it?

My 92 Honda Civic VX which they only made that model for 2 years I think got 52 mpg of the showroom floor. It has 170,000 miles on it still gets 45. IDK why they stopped making it, it was specifically designed for mpg, has 110hp really high geared only weight 1900lbs. Everything is designed for mpg the engine was a specially designed VTEC and would stop getting fuel to some of the valves or something when at cruising speed. 70mph in 5th turns about 1800rpm.

Oh Matt, I am so sorry! Be careful driving, the weather is horrible on this side of the state. Where you are going may not be bad, but drive safe.

On a happy note, the picture came today! Geordi's first point!! He wasn't too pleased getting on the platform, thus the tucked tail, but he's going to be stunning when he grows up!! (yea, that's the judge and me behind him, with a fake background...)
