Well, the conversation with the animal control officer didn't go very well. I'm a beaten woman right now. I know EXACTLY who called from some of the things the officer told me. The man wasn't nice at all. I ended up crying at the end of the phone call, and then he tells me, "I didn't mean to upset you". REALLY REALLY???!!! I've concluded at this point, the only thing I can do is give the baby away. I've been crying all morning, and probably won't be fit company for nothing or nobody for the rest of this hitch home. To top all that off, I got a speeding ticket on the way home last night. I'm SO (bleeping) DONE!!

I can't like this post. So sorry about what appears to be a really bad run of luck. I'll keep you in my prayers, I wish I could do more but, I don't know what to do.

I've had my share over the years of dealing with so-called lower level City / County employees .. many that are on some sort of power trip, even though my tax money is footing the tab to help keep these people employed .. take it up the Food Chain is what I would do .. surely you have some contacts in the Parrish that you could draw on for advice or guidance .. ??

This is just not right. Are there any other arrangements you can make while you are at work? Can you take it to court?

When Janet and Mike began the "Journey to a New Kitchen" .. I intentionally held back adding to the narrative since I thought it best they let their story unfold first .. I will now add to the Kitchen Narrative ..

I spent 6 Months living with no Kitchen .. a hot plate, a microwave and an electric skillet set up on a table made from 2 sawhorses and a door became my friends .. why 6 Months .. ?? I decided I wanted to pretty much do it all myself, I had no one else to worry about but me, there were a few various glitches that happened along the way, at the time I was still spending time on the road and what not .. so, as follows :

Willie, that's gorgeous! Did you do the counters too? VERY nice!!! That's a built in microwave and wall oven? Fantastic job! LOVE the tile work! Isn't it amazing how small the room looks with all the cabinets/appliances gone and then how useful it becomes with everything put back in. Don't know that I'd have done well for 6 months using sawhorses, especially without a sink!

Oh no. What exactly are they saying you've done wrong? That officer needs to come out and see that your dong is not being mistreated. Has he even been out to your house? He has to answer to someone, can you contact them and explain what's going on? Isn't there someone who would like to watch your pup every other week? Why can't people mind their own business?

"As for getting the pill into the cat in the first place ... I suggest kevlar"

It's not common knowledge, but kevlar will not stop an ice pick. The ice pick will part the weave and get to the person underneath. Now cats have 20+ ice picks known as teeth and claws. All the times I've had to med. or bathe one of my fine furry friends, I've lost the battle for want of plate armor. I have never figured out how a cat could loose to a dog? unless it's a weight class thing.

Thanks, Janet .. I took a sawzall and surgically cut around the old sink cabinet, leaving a functioning sink in the kitchen until everything was ready for the floor .. I had decided that ceramic tiling the floor would be much smoother if I just did the entire floor, even where the new cabinets would be .. yes, the microwave did get mounted above the stove after I finished the stove backsplash tile .. after I took out the sink, I just used a bathroom sink and since most of the work was during Spring and Summer, I also have an outdoor sink station next to my grill that I used ..

Not tooting my own horn here, but when I had estimates done prior to the gutting of the kitchen, they came in at around 35K for what I wanted .. I got 'er done for right at 15K and that included all new appliances and a couple 6 panel doors for the pantry and door to basement ..

Oh, damn Roto that just ain't right! Don't just give up. Roll up you sleeves & let animal control have it right in the mouth. Your Son takes care of your pup when your gone right? Get him to tell AC the truth. Then give me the address of the rat fink and my baseball bat and I will make a road trip. I told Unc. Willie he did better then me because I tend to take a more aggressive approach to problem solving. But don't just roll over and let them deprive you of your Dog. You can straighten out screwed up parts and supply systems so take the same stand with Animal control and make them wish they'd never accused you of abuse. Then confront the snitch very loudly and directly. If it worried about your pup then why didn't it bring some water and food over before calling the cops? then ask you whats up before calling the cops? I've had a few very loud discussions with my neighbors over they're self righteous attitudes. Oh this kind of injustice just gets me ...... off ! This might just be my Scottish blood talking or my southern blood , but I can't stand goodie two shoes messing with my friends! Better yet, call your local news station and make all this public. My Daughter and her husband got into a scrape over raising rabbits to sell to snake owners. They had been doing this for years to provide food for boas. After they got the local news to look at trey're system and raised havoc against the snitches, it got straightened out real fast and all cruelty charges dropped . Amanda's biggest concern was that I'd drive down to Ft. Meyers, guess She knows me pretty well. " Cry "Havoc!" . and let slip the dogs of war!" the Bard knew the truth!

There is always the Hammer and the Nail approach .. however, in general, the pen is mightier than the sword .. I'd throw a few more clichés out there, but two is probably enough ..

The issue with dealing in any Bureaucracy is, ahh, it's a Bureaucracy .. gather your info, outline your defense, find out who's who, see if you know someone that knows someone, (unless you yourself actually knows someone), try to slide in under the radar, don't intentionally piss off the "One Who Will Claim He Is Just Doing His Job", because he'll likely still have that job when the dust settles .. plead your case rationally and calmly to the right person .. if that does not work, then the next step is to decide if the juice is worth the squeeze ..

I've been in this Chatty Kathy mood the last few days for some reason, so let's pull up a chair for a story or two ..

The year I had my first heart attack, I owned a Commercial Building that was vacant at the time .. I neglected to keep the weeds / grass trimmed after I got out of the Hospital and the City posted my lot as a "public nuisance" based on an ordinance .. the guy in charge of that Department and I had had words before over something that's another story .. at any rate, I knew it was retaliation .. but I also knew I was in violation of the ordinance, and I knew the sign that he posted was required by law to stay in place until the "public nuisance" was cleared officially, which requires an inspection, etc .. the nuisance sign was not going to do much to help me find a renter .. I knew the City Manager, I called him, explained the scenario, he understood and took care of it, off the record .. I took down the sign and threw it in the trash .. end of story .. ??

No .. I decided the Inspector that posted the sign had no business in that job, for various reasons .. so, I bided my time, maybe a year went by, when I was in town and out and about, or a customer would drop by the shop that was a local, I would gently ask about said inspector, innocently gathering bits and pieces until I had enough intel to pretty well prove the guy had been taking some kickback under the table for this and that .. called the City Manager, went to lunch with him (because you never want to do this stuff unless it's mono on mono) handed him the intel .. well, the rest is vindication history ..

Story 2 .. a couple buddies and I put up a six foot stockade fence around my backyard maybe 10 years ago .. I decided I wanted a privacy fence because I was sick and tired of strangers traipsing thru my yard, I like my privacy, I want to be able to sit on my deck undisturbed, etc .. I also knew that if I would ever want a storage building, I should get it before the fence, for logistical purposes .. so, I had the Amish build me a 12' x 18' outbuilding with the back of the building right on my property line, logic being, the back of the building would provide 18' where I would not need a fence, IOW, the fence would stop where the corner of the building began and then begin on the opposite corner of the building .. and, it would save me a little fence money ..

A year went by and I get a certified letter from the city informing me that my building, according to code, should be INSIDE the fence .. since I knew the City never enforces these things unless someone complains and a new, my poop don't stink couple had moved in behind me who's kids had been regularly throwing balls and what not that would fly over my fence and then expect me to retrieve them, or if I was not around, they would try to climb over my fence to get them, I pretty well knew where the complaint came from .. especially since the week before I told these people that from here on out, anything flying over my fence would be considered mine from here on out ..

I meet in person with the head of the City department, he comes out to the house, we have a nice chat, he determines it's a nice building, it's all on or within my property line, he cans the complaint .. life goes on ..

Two months later I get another Certified letter from the City Attorney, demanding the building be moved inside the line and 18' of fence be installed in the gap, in order to "maintain neighborhood continuity" and "comply with existing code" .. at this point, the juice is just not worth the squeeze .. I empty the building of contents, a buddy and me jack up the building and put 4x4's under it, I call a guy with a winch truck, we winch the building forward all of 2 feet, and install some fence ..

I have more, but this has gotten long enough already .. I'll end it with this .. Animal Control is a joke .. they won't come out and pick up a skunk that's in a catch and release trap, they won't come out and pick up a ground hog that's in a catch and release trap, but they will harass a nice woman over her dog that's being taken care of anyway .. Animal Control, really .. ??

It is so gratifying that you and Janet would take the time to remember that and then later follow up with this post .. :)

I've read everything Cornwell has written, and although you probably know this already now, "The Grail Quest" series is also very, very good ..

Added to the reading list. :thumb:

Nice remodel job UW. We actually looked at a light like your 'nipple' light. Lighting is our biggest challenge right now. The contractor asked if you wanted to change the lighting but we said no. The ceiling is all wood tongue and groove and I didn't want to take it down to relocate and/or install new lightening. So now we're kind of struggling on how to get more / better lighting when changing fixtures.

To top all that off, I got a speeding ticket on the way home last night. I'm SO (bleeping) DONE!!

You're a strong woman and can handle situations and people at work. Settle down and listen to some of the good advice your getting. This can be remedied and your capable of doing it. Rant on us to relieve the stress ... then work on getting this figured out to your satisfaction.

You can handle it, you can do it. I know you can.

he, he .... how to dry a cat. Put it in the clothes dryer ... ask Janet about it. One of our cats will no longer go into the laundry area.

Mike .. for what it's worth, I like the directional/positionable can lighting as a supplement .. and I put mine in front of the cabinets and pantry .. I know some folks are leery of doing DIY electrical, but with your knowledge, cutting some can fixture holes, using the cans that have the friction fit tabs that are designed for existing structures and snaking romex branching off your main ceiling fixtures is cake .. I took another look at your pics and I'm sure your ceiling joists run left to right which should give you fine access to the space above .. just a thought, not being there in person, there could be other considerations ..

I hear what you're saying. If I just wanted to move or add within the joist area of the existing fixtures that's one thing. But I'd really like to position lights where you'd have to go through the beams. A dry way ceiling no problem, cut the holes where you need and repair/replace dry wall as needed.

We did have under cabinet lights added all-round so that helps a lot. And yikes, we could have lit up the counters like Chicago's airport at night with the new fangled led light strips. Some of those are incredibly bright and expensive.

I knew you'd say that .. :) .. if the cans are the larger style, you could actually use a long shank spade bit and get a hole thru the joist that would be at an angle, yet still easily allow the romex thru .. of course, one joist deep would be the limit .. or, if there is no drywall above the tongue and groove, just gently remove it, mark each piece numerically, do the job and reinstall the ceiling .. I don't recon Janet would like that idea much because it would get messy .. :)

Janet.....Mike.....are you in the path of the storms moving through right now? If so, please take care.....I've got a severe thunderstorm watch, high winds and possible tornadoes for the next couple of hours....

Yes we are - the rain was so heavy I could see the edge of the property. Then the thunder-boomers moved in. May be starting to pass / let up now.
