Late to the discussion about TC and batteries that went on a couple of pages ago. I vape TC mode in just about all my atomizer/mod combos for the slightly increased battery life. I set my wattage to 10 watts and my temp to 400F. It's a good vape with protection that keeps me out of the nasty chemical range (diacetyl, etc).

On my Alien 220W I vape in power mode because the minimum power setting in TC mode is 15W. Why they did that on a 6W to 220W mod is beyond me. Surprisingly, 15W is pretty hot in TC mode on the Alien with a Kayfun .7 ohm coil. TCR is set at 92 like I always do. Wattage is set at 10W.

But, the Alien gives me about 30 clock hours at 10W on two Samsung 30Q's (minus sleep time). I can take the Alien out of the house for a day and not worry about carrying extra cells. I just carry a 10ml bottle of juice in case I need it.

My Pico Dual is about the same vape time on two 18650's and it goes from 1W to 200W in any mode. The Pico Dual isn't pocket friendly unless you are wearing a jacket. The Alien 220W fits in a jeans pocket just fine, since the mod is shaped so that batteries don't increase the width on one end like the Pico Dual (which is a triangular shape).

I build my 2mm coils with SS316L and space them using the stretch and compress method so that I can use TC mode or wattage mode interchangeably.

I needs some learning folks. I decided to give TC vaping another try. I found a Lavabox DNA 75 mod for $32 on sale and sprung for 1 (actually 2). I figure on using SS316 from TemCo. They're back ordered on 26g but I can get 28g. Looking at steam engine using 28g and a 2.5mm ID coil 7 wraps will come out around .7 ohms. (7 wraps because that's what I'm used to winding using Kanthal) So,

1. What gauge wire are you using?
2. What coil size are you using?
3. How many wraps?
4. How do you 'care for' a SS coil? Can it be dry burned to clean?
5. What settings are you using on your mod? Watts? Max Temp?

The last time I tried TC was about 2 years ago w/ a DNA 40. It was nice but didn't rock my boat, so I went back to kanthal.

I use the following:
1. 26ga
2. 3mm
3. 6 wraps for .46Ω
4. I pulse it to slowly burn it clean then when cool I use a small brush
5. 20 - 25 watts

I went ahead and ordered 26ga SS316L from Temco when it was on 3-month backorder and got it within 5 days. You might want to go ahead and put the order in for 26ga, you just might get lucky.
I need to get a better mod before going back to TC with my SS316L. Right now I don't know of any as I haven't been keeping up with them as I should.

Did you see this one?

Yep, that was horrible.

Thank you (you enabler), I did see it. :D Then I promptly shut the tab down. :thumb:

The next day I went went back and ordered the Angry Bird & flamingo ones.

I retired my spare little 2.5's, refilled the others, got two extra bottles and brought out some unicorn bottles someone sent me (they are cute). Once I receive the order, I am most interested in making a Mexican chocolate, with a bit of the cinnamon and a jalapeno seed. then a root beer float (I have enough cream flavors that I didn't get the float offered.) I have five more to dream up. Using the tiny ones will work well for new mixes as I fine-tune them. OH-- I also got a desert ship. I am changing around the labels without regard to what they previously held, so I will be in for some interesting surprises. I might again double up on some of my favorites, like biscuit and butternut.

Yesterday was a bad back day, so I am mostly reading today. I have also overcome my solitaire addiction. I cannot today think of anything more boring to do. Satiated.

I'm sorry about your back. Hope it is better very soon.

I had a solitaire (computer version) addiction. It got quite out of hand. The good news was, when I had all those mini strokes, solitaire helped with regaining some motor coordination, concentration and retaining some memory on the fly. I just learned the medical procedure that caused all those problems needs to be done again. Really hoping I don't need to take up solitaire again.

uhmmmmm......... ....... it's on the tip of my tongue ....... ......... it'll come to me inna minute................ oh wait.......I know....

A REO silly girl!

@Diver9543 gave you a great answer. I had looked up the wire on Amazon, Temco also sells through there, and had found it earlier but now it seems to be gone so Temco may really be sold out of it at this point. Kinda mind blowing that vapers have depleted the entire stock of a major wire distributor. That's a lot of wire.

Do you know if there are concerns of 'it' turning 'toxic' if over heated like glowing as w/ nickel when it came on the scene?

I use Stainless Steel 28ga (SS316L). My coils are 2mm, 8 wraps for a .7 ohm coil.

You can dry burn SS, but it's not completely necessary. Just wipe it with alcohol to remove any traces of production oil. Mine's usually squeaky clean off the roll. I dry burn lightly, just enough to see a glow and make sure it's lighting up correctly from the center out. More glow time isn't better.

The alumina coating that results is being questioned because there's evidence that it can flake off and end up in the vapor. That's being studied. I lightly dry burn during a re-wick just enough to see the red glow and then I dunk the coil under running water and wipe it off. I vape at 10W in Wattage or TC mode with a max temp of 400F.

The key to a good vape in TC mode is getting the wattage setting right. My Alien 220W defaulted to 75W when I first put it in TC mode. It was a crackling experience! Setting wattage in TC mode should be done at whatever wattage you normally vape at for the coil you use.

The Temperature setting will top stop it and prevent overheating. You want your wattage to be set at a point where it maintains the vape just under the max temp setting. Too much and it's constantly cutting off power to maintain the max heat you set and prevent overtemp.

You can vape at the same wattage in TC mode that you do in wattage mode. Reports say that vaping much higher than 400F can result in harmful chemicals in the vape, Diacetyl being one of those. Of course, it depends on air flow through the coil. If you vape DTL with a high air flow atomizer you can up the wattage because the increased air flow is keeping the vape cooler.

I'm a few months into using SS along with TC mode and so far lovin the vape. My first go's were 24 and 26 gauge SS I won in a contest. I did a pile of reading and TC was a lot of jargon that was confusing and still is to a point. I was building 2.5, 3, 3.5mm single wire SS builds, vaping a tank or few then build something else learning TC, IMO wasting good builds just to try something else. Began building claptons using the 24 and 26ss with 32 kanthal wraps and again great vape but 24 and 26 are too thick for me to vape regularly, great enough to go shopping for wire. I went onto ebay and from lightening vapes bought 100'-28SS, 250' 34SS, 250' 34 kanthal and for kicks bid on a 100' 32 nickle I won for 82 cents.
Began building 28/34 claptons and found my happy place with the 28SS/34SS coils. I don't build super low ohm high risk coils but range from .5 to 1.2 ohm builds with the occasional nasty low coil just because I can. I have been doing a lot of playing around with ArcticFox in my IStick 100TC, learning the power curves and tweaking my vape to get the best I can.
I clean my SS by heating up a bit, scraping the bigger crusties off. I have never dryburned any coil red hot. I have a bowl of water and with a glass dropper and the mod pointed downward so I have no risk of water into the hitter. I heat up and drop a couple drops of water onto the coil and it sizzles then apply some more heat till the sizzle subsides, blow off the excess water then scrape and/or brush then repeat a couple times. It works quite well. With my subtank mini's I found that after cleaning the coil, no matter if kanthal or SS I also have to remove the coil from the RBA then with paper towels, alcohol and tweezers clean the airflow shaft or I get a burnt residue taste from the scrapings that just rinsing the RBA in water doesn't remove then tastes through and spoils the next build. Its now just second nature for me to remove the build in any atty, clean the deck area and put the build back.
I have said this before that I have sold myself short not trying SS wire earlier and now my only kanthal wire I use is 28k/34k for my wife's clapton builds cause she won't(will not) want to hassle with using TC or any other wire types. I lock her atty so she doesn't adjust nothing and she likes it that way.
I also have a bunch of 32 kanthal wrapped claptons using different gauges of SS as core wire that I was making(cause its fun to make claptons) and prolly not use so I'm twisting them to use them up and they too are a mighty fine vape in a merlin cause they are too fat to fit into the subtank slot unless I modify the RBA to accommodate the fat wire and that ain't going to happen also I don't have a RDA either.

I wonder... if they are just having problems getting the little spools for vapers... maybe lots of wire, but nothing small enough to put it on for the little batches....

I have no idea. I don't pulse it to a real high red glow.

Good question, I saw a post somewhere that a person showed Temco on Amazon or Ebay that was selling SS316L for an unbelievable price for 100'.

Last time I ordered Temco 28ga SS316L wire from Amazon, they sent me a zip lock bag with a 100' roll of wire in it. That was hard to work with. You had to take the roll out of the bag and try not to let it uncoil while unrolling and clipping it. The next time I ordered I bought Master of Clouds SS316L wire and it's fine.

Looks like Temco may have dropped out, but there's lots of vendors for SS wire on Amazon. Check this link at Amazon for SS316L wire.

Try using a pipe cleaner after rinsing & cooling the coil. They fit inside the coil very well, & are stiff enough to clean the outside. A big pack is about a dollar in the Walmart craft section. They are long enough to cut into 3 or 4 pieces & you can clean with soap & water several times before tossing.

When I switched to SS months ago, I got a 3 meter (?) roll from FT just to try it. Then deciding to keep using it, I got 2 250' rolls from TemCo. I have almost used all of the FT roll.

At least you are prepared. When I was ordering mine I just about got the 250' roll but only got 100'. I still have 20 premade coils that I made from SS316L I picked up some place else.

Thank you both. I'm going in with a backup plan (locally) this time if the mini strokes begin happening. Otherwise it's a PITA/breeze since the hospital is three hours away. I was in shock and angry/terrified for several days after finding out about it. After those several days, I realized I'd never once thought about smoking or using stronger juice. A new milestone. Christie on the other hand... :w00t:

Three months is a long time to get smaller spools to wind the larger ones onto. The whole thing strikes me as odd. It seems they'd make more off a little order but then add in shipping and maybe concentrating on larger orders is more profitable. Who knows? If they have it in stock though their quality and service can't be beat.

I'd be ticked if I received wire that way. It was Temco that sent you that? I got a normal order/price/shipping/packaging from them through Amazon. Maybe they were trying to accommodate customers as best they could?

I saw Master of Clouds on there, maybe they bought out Temco. It looked like rebranded Temco wire. Oddly, I couldn't refind the link to post on here but they did look competitive.
