Last photos of my battery tube project. (promise!)

Here are some thumbnails of the acid bath process:

After masking, before acid bath (delro shows size comparison)

After less than 5 minutes in the acid, exposed parts of the steel blacken. This was repeated 3 times and left in acid bath for an hour each time.

After rinsing in water, drying and salt blasting, then spraying with an acrylic sealant - installed. (B&W photo to hide the gold shield). The white flecks on the mod body in this photo are dust, not surface damage .

It looks awesome Pigs.

I am not very knowledgeable with metals but can't you just sand off the gold from the logo?

-1.jpg

Tape off the mod around the logo and sand the gold off???

I wonder if its glued in-place? Maybe remove it from the mod, sand it down and glue it back on???
Or while its off treat it like you did the battery tube???

Perhaps leave it off and fill the space in with something else??? LOL, I like that idea.

I tried sanding it off, assuming the gold paint was just a surface colour. It took some of the ugly shine off but seems like it is some type of gold coloured alloy. Very hard - much harder than aluminium.
If you look closely you'll see a fine black dust. That's the residue from sanding. Not sure why gold metal leaves a black dust but there it is.

I've tried carefully prying it off but it won't budge (yet) and I'm trying not to damage the gunmetal paint on the aluminium body. I'll get there eventually and like you suggest - leave it off or replace it with somehing else.
I also tried applying the patina acid treatment with a cotton bud but it had zero effect - no reaction.

Exactly. It seems like the acid reaction creates more of a surface treatment. Since the photos I've buffed it and now it's lost those hard lines and is starting to look more weathered.
My plan is to repeat the treatment another time or two to get a deeper patina - hopefully with a bit of a pitted look.
Pitted would need a stronger acid. That would mean you'd have to seal and mask off the insides and the areas well. Or you could use something like a dremel to speed up the process by burring into the metal for a quicker result stii masking off the inside of the tube and the areas you don't want to treat.

Thanks @Resistance .
I ended up lightly pitting the surface by tapping with a serrated blade before my second round of acid baths. It worked well. I also sprayed the final result with clear acrylic (suggested by the retailer who sold the patina acid solution) which has sealed it and given it a semi - gloss, which I like.

All this is fun and interesting but the bottom line is that it will always be an ugly mod. Curves against straight lines against diagonal lines etc.

At least the build quality is solid and the boro door has good magnets and fits tight with no play. Fires pretty hard too. I really wish the fire button had a locking feature though. I think all mechs with side fire should.

Now I'm feeling happier about the look.

I sanded down yesterday's first attempt right back to plain stainless steel.
This time I cut my masking strips more carefully and gave it 3 long acid baths, allowing the acid to soak into the masking tape so that the silver stripes have black splotches on them.

Then I used a salt air gun

Bug-A-Salt 3.0 Realtree Camo

to give it a pitted look. Fired multiple times at close range.

The Dani SBS will look awesome paired with the FeV in full SS. Wishing you much luck in getting one from CdV.

SvoëMesto posted this photo the other day on FB. LOL, I do like that mod.

Looking at the link you posted the other day the RBA is basically a KFL with the Aerokon airflow. Same build deck. SvM is late to the party but I think they will still sell a good number of those. The pure MTL folks who like Boro's and AIO's will be very happy.

Would love to see some photos of your cabinet restore project!!!
I can see why you like it. It looks super.

I didn't see the final result till now the issues we have after loadshedding(when we're on a total blackout in certain areas)

It came out great. I like it!.

I’m curious too about the black dust. I know aluminum gets surface oxides that come off as black dust but obviously that isn’t aluminum. I wonder if it could be brass or an alloy of brass and something else.

It could be. I just rubbed it with my finger and it has a faint brassy odour.

Ok Shinys I’m not having a responses in my search for a Delta Revenant Squonk mod. One of mine died unexpectedly.

Since we all like to hoard vape gear I was hoping that someone here might have an extra one sitting around.

Please DM me if you’ve got one you’d like a nice home for!!

I don't sorry. But I forgot to reply to your post about new mods.

There's a Pulse v3 out from Vandy Vape. I think you have the v2? I've got both and love the bottom fill port in the v2. But so far I've had no troubles using the new bottle fill port in the v3. It still means I don't need to take the bottle out to fill it.

There's also a new 21700 mod from Dovpo, the Tribute:
