Does torching the ceramic actually do anything. I thought that was for the oddly v1

some of the originals had a soapy taste. only cure found was to put them in a blue flame (kitchen gas oven). make sure the flame gets to all of the ceramic including the inside. after that no soapy taste. i'm thinkin the new ceramics dont have that taste but just takes a minute to douce in flame. careful though it gets really hot. takes 5 minutes to cool.

Ok. I was looking at silica wicks .com but they only 3 and 3.5. Google here I come

Why not Stormy's? I'm having problem with the above mention vendor with their shipping speed, a week is just too long to take to make up a small package
Stormy's has really fast packaging/shipping

He said in post #92 that he got a couple of feet of wick from Stormy's, but you told him in post #96 that it was junk.

To be fair, I think you were talking about the pre-made wicks that they have been sending out with these.

Looks to me like they are sending out the 3 ohm silica wicks no one has been ordering.

i think i just got a good deal on no risistance wire .999 fine silver 30 gauge round . 50 feet for $18.61 and half of that is shipping cost. the company is Rio Grande Brands and Supplies. Also have some xc 116 nextel braided silica rope coming. i'm currently using kantal a1 32 gauge risistance wire with a single cotton wick (yarn). got around 4 wraps and it ohms at 2.8. the flavor is great but the vapor production not so much. i'm really new at making coils. so my question is how much of an improvement should i realize when i get my silica and wire? all input is welcome

The little wick/coil that was supplied with the second batch is what I'm talking about, the 2,2.5 and 3mm wick that Stormy's sells is just fine. But that little supplied wick has no place in a high performance device.

The way that I understood his post was that he was using the little supplied wick but was waiting for his better wick to arrive that he had ordered from Stormy

And I for sure misunderstood, I had to read that a couple of times, a senior moment no doubt

This is how I make almost all my wick/coils that are silica based, I'm going to keep it brief by not telling
you that I torch the resistor wire to take the "spring" out of it.
And I'm not going to tell you that I torch the silica to remove any manufacturing residuals.
The metal rod that I use is the same diameter as most round tooth picks and is good for wrapping coils with 3.5 mm silica, If you are using a smaller size rope choose the correct size rod or spin a tooth pick in fine sand paper til it is the size that you need.

1. Attach your non-resistor wire to your resistor wire and wrap the resistor wire section tightly on the shaft, carefully adjust spacing of the coils and slid it off the rod.
2. Cut a small piece of the thinnest aluminum foil to size about 3/4 in. by 1 in. Roll the foil onto the end of the wick as tight as you can, it should look like the end of a shoe string. Feed the end of the wick with the foil on it into the coil. It's going to look like it's not going to fit so you have to very carefully wind it in there.
Once your past the foil, slid the coil to center ,pull the foil off and install.

Nice tutorial. The ingenuity of the ECF community never ceases to amaze me. I would never have thought to use foil over the end of the silica. I wrap my coil on something else in a genesis setup and had not figured out how to do it in the nautilus.
Thank you

I have been linking to this review many times before because he does a real good job of it especially joining the resistor wire to the non- resistor wire. This may seem difficult at first, just leave a little extra sticking out to twist then cut off the excess with nail clippers.
One thing I want to add here is when you bring your wick from the top of the ceramic and down the side channels be careful to not get the wick tight as it makes the bend from the top to the side channels. This is just the way I am doing it. I'll just link to the vid this time

Would 3mm wick work in this tank with a 50/50 mix?
You could try it and see but the channel size is pretty much made for 2 mm, before I dremel'd out my channels I was using 3.5 mm and snipping off three groups of silica on either side of the coil so as to have 3.5 inside the coil and 2mm down the sides. It worked real well.
I've tried 3 mm and it worked but 2 mm worked better .

i've watched that tutorial 3x now i think. finished another attempt at a coil. folded the cotton yarn over and made 5 wraps with the coil. then trimmed the top yarn piece to the edge of channel. dont have the nr wire yet so folded the ends of wire close to coil and started twisting. ohms out at 2.8. right now have the mouth piece shut - lots of gurgling at the moment. getting better at it but not really there yet. maybe when i get my nextel silica and nr wire things will fall in place.

What you're doing sounds like it should work just fine, I'm thinking about pulling out my yarn and trying it also.

I have problems with the Nextel on the V2 ody ceramic, It fits if I really work it in, but too tight, it slows the wicking. It does work well when you use the Nextel on the top piece, like a little bow-tie. Unfortunately with the V2 ceramic/ ceramic housing is that one side is stainless steel so I would have to drill out the stainless steel to make it deeper or wider so that the ring screws in well.

There is a guy on ebay that sells a high temp wick that does work well, he doesnt state that it is Nextel but from the temp description it has all the characteristics.

Silica Rope 3 mm Silica Wick High Quality Temperature Resistance 1000°C | eBay

I wash it in my usual manner which is 30 mins in distilled water, throw dirty water away and boil again for another 30 mins. Then I torch it before use. I do this with all my silica to avoid any "off" taste from any coatings

I still prefer the silica from silicawicks.com. Its firmer and doesnt fray as much. THe above comes unwrapped easier, but its not like low quality wick that tends to not only fray, but it almost disintegrates and you get fibers flying all over and actually stings your fingers when in contact.
