You've received some great advice so far. I actually think your female cat is smart; I'm not fixed but have no use for male "cats". JUSKIDDING! !!

On a serious note, I can't stress enough how much patience plays a role with ferals. As previous members have stated, it can take months or even a year for a feral cat to trust. Or they may never. Calm persistance, and a quiet voice in addition to gradually placing food a little bit closer to the house may help.

Kitty likely has come from a long line of ferals so it makes sense he doesn't trust.

This is the reason it's so important for folks to spay and neuter...100's upon 1000's of litters of kitties whose lifespan is very short.

Good luck!

JK

In NY my wife used to do TNR, which is trap, neuter, release. This is the best way to stop feral colonies from growing out of control. She would work with various agency's to have them neutered and release them back in the wild if they were not able to be adopted. Some cats are extremely feral and can be very violent. She would then visit the colonies and feed them to make sure that they survived. It was very difficult for her when we left because she had a bond with them but she keeps in touch with some people, and still 5 years later gets reports of how they're doing.

Oh, I so agree. The stupid woman we used to rent from was one of those "crazy cat lady" types -- she must have had 20 of 'em, all some degree of relation to each other, because she never got her cats fixed. When I found that out, I swear I wanted to slap her. Unfortunately, as tempting as it sounds, you can't really slap sense into anybody. All it took for us was our baby's first heat -- keeping her in the garage, listening to her miserable yowling -- I swear it sounds like "aowwwwwww" -- just as soon as she seemed to be calming down a little, we got her crated and took her to get fixed! And her first shots and whatnot. She's a very happy healthy housecat now, though we do let her outside when the weather is decent -- which it certainly hasn't been, all this week! She is NOT pleased about that. :D

The place we used for our cat's fixing, and all her shots, does TNR, at no cost -- if you can get the little bandits crated! It's called "Planned Pethood" -- they also rescue animals from the animal control shelter, to try and get them adopted out rather than euthanized. Great people! They don't charge much for their services, basically "at cost", so we always make sure to leave them a donation, so they can keep on keeping on.

Just a little heads up on cats since we are discussing them. While I love all animals, cats are one of the most destructive feral animals on the planet. They kill a multitude of different species just to "play" with them.My neighbor used to feed the strays all the time so my house constantly smelled like cat pee.Yuck.If you really do feel an animal is a stray the best way to help would be to trap them and bring them to a local shelter. I used to tie a note on them to see if they had an owner and luckily I had a cat lady close by who dedicated her life to rehabing feral/stray cats. She would then find them homes if possible.I realise this is not always an option for people but feral cats are a real threat to local wildlife.

If you just want the mod, vaporbeast still has the kbox mini for $23.99 -- try the YEAHBABY coupon code, and it will probably drop to just under $22.

Which is why TNR is so important. Stopping the colonies saves both their lives as well as others. One cat we rescued was just 5 months old. When we brought her in to be fixed, she was pregnant! They will bred just for the sake of it. Needless to say she has been in our home for 14 years now!!:D

They're also the best possible means of combatting wild vermin -- rats, mice, and snakes. Our cat is nowhere near feral, but she kills all that vermin and brings them to the door to show us. :D Unfortunately she's also killed a few birds, but we let her know we strongly disapprove; she hasn't brought us any birds in quite a while.

If your cat would stop killing the snakes they would "combat" all the vermin!!:)
Snakes are people too!!:)
But thats my point.Cats are indiscriminate killers.

Down here by me they are the prey. Eagles, Osprey's, Monitor Lizards, Black Bear, Panthers, Pythons, Coyotes, and Gators are the main hunters here.:shock:
