We had a a "blue Russian" rat for a pet for awhile. He was mostly my husband's buddy, but I liked him too and we'd let him run around the house (some...he had to be watched because he chewed wires) and play with us on the couch when we watched TV. The hubby would let him ride on his shoulder...even when he went outside. He'd even let him ride on his shoulder when he went to Petsmart. They were like visiting rock stars, everyone clustering around wanting to meet "Sebastian" (the rat). We ultimately had to re-home him when he got sexually mature and a bit meaner. Had a toddler in the house at the time. Seemed the kindest, best thing to let him go to a home better suited to have a rat.I have 8 rats, they have such a bad name but they are lovely, intelligent and very clean, so many myths about them.
I take them around the village on my shoulder, one at a time of course. They are quite the celeb in my town, they we also published on zooplus as pet of the week. My cage is from floor to ceiling in the back room.
All pets are wonderful really.
You will be glad you did. They will probably want to have both of you in several times. Seems like both of you have some issues with your families. Time to break loose from that and develop relationships with healthier people.

I'm awaiting 2 pkgs ATM; one of them is vapemail, some Blueberry Muffin I ordered last night from sweet-vapes.com. The other is something I ordered from walmart.com -- Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream... because I've decided that I'm tired of looking 10 yrs older than my actual age -- this stuff says it can take 10 yrs of wrinkles away; heck, 10 yrs ago I didn't HAVE any wrinkles! Next time I have $20 free, I'm also going to order this stuff called Olay Regenerist Wrinkle & Pore Vanisher -- just what I've been waiting for all my life, Bondo for my face!
