I started at one end of the wick and heated each section until it was glowing nicely, Don't be afraid to give it the works with the torch, it can take it. The guidelines that say 5mins at 1292F for "Small stacks of goods up to 1/4 inch thick" If you doing a single strand there shouldn't be a need for 5 mins. You have to remember that they are referring to quanitites of material being fired in a kiln (indirect heating) in stacks. The 5mins is to ensure the center of those stacks reaches 1292F and gets clean too. You have to remember ceramic is an excellent insulator of heat, it takes time to penetrate a stack of material. We are dealing with a hollow tube of very thin braid and direct heating of the material from an open flame.

You will see the sizing change as you heat it, the wick gets a translucent silverish looking coating on it and as it continues to heat it becomes a pure white color. ;)

I didn't clean mine with alcohol, but that isn't a bad idea. Hopefully everyone will chime in with their experiences as they get their wick

So I wanted to post an update for y'all, and anyone interested. My #400 stainless steel mesh showed up today, so I made a set up with it. 3.5Ohms at 6.4V. The heat transfer seems a bit much for my tastes, very very very strong throat hit even with 100%VG. (I didn't think to test it at a lower voltage, it's probably better)

IMHO the ceramic wick excels leaps and bounds out in front of everything that I have tried. It is absolutely flawless. I realized after dripping (to taste a new juice, from Bruce) and subsequently getting a dry hit (on a normal 510 atty), that I haven't had a single dry/burnt hit in 3 days of vaping 60VG 40PG dark juices. 3 days of heavy vaping, and zero carbon or caramelization on the wick, even where the coils touch. The piece of wick can be rinsed and then fired with the blowtorch again, and its clean. Even after 3 days, the flavor was just as clean as day one. I have to say I am wholeheartedly impressed with this.

Makes me very happy I put in an order for 25 feet, I love the GG family!

Good, i'm glad i ordered the Nextel 440 then... it should be at least as good at the 316..
just stronger and a higher temperature spec.

It says the 440 has a color tint to it. Let us know if it changes to pure white after you burn the sizing off. If it does then the color burned off also and if it doesn't then I hope the color is imbedded in the ceramic and not something that can be inhaled by the user.

I just put a foot of wick down on my metal welding table and run the oxyacetylene torch over it for about a minute. Then after it cools I stick it in a jar of everclear for a couple of minutes then rinse in the sink.

I have my dad's welding/cutting torches around, would they work?:confused: Everclear I have!!!:lol::lol::lol::lol:

But why I quoted -- thanks so much, Jonah and Rick...........

you are referring to the XC-116 Jonah linked right?

also should i order this right now or will the wick that comes with it be good enough to use up first?

Guys, I agree when we search for a better wicks but we dont really know what is inside them. Better play safe with the new wick I brought from China. Its the original wick that E2 use and the factory send me the certificate for it.

Hi Imeo, is the new china wick the one that came with our iatty or is this a different one? Is this what you are sending out to your distributors now?

I tried my first nextel wick yesterday (after heat cleaning, of course!) and so far I am very impressed.

Any welding/cutting torch will work. Depending on the type how long it takes will very, just burn until it gets silvery white under the flame and you are good to go.

That is the one he is talking about. The wick that comes with it is very nice and I have been using it for a couple of months in other devices. The Nextel just lasts longer, wicks better, and has no taste of it's own.

Sounds perfect to me Imeo. When can we expect it to be with your sellers?

So the wick that comes with it has a slight taste? Also how long did the XC-116 take to come in after you ordered?

Thanks in advance for the help guys!!

Its not the original wick thedude, its the a new wick that all E2 use. Its 1,5mm in width and we fold it to make the wire on it:)

i asked the "temperature engineer" at the omega website that jonah linked about burning off the coating and i let him know what i intended on using it for. He said instructions are included and he said that there should be no "out gassing", meaning that there should be no chemicals or anything coming off the wick when its heated
