OMG, there's no one around! You people have lives! waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

I dozed off in the bedroom last night (surprisingly, because the bed usually kills my back so I don't sleep in my own bed). Colin woke me up around 11 pm so he could go to bed (I think I slept for like 2 hours?) Then I slept from about 1:30 am till *9pm* I really must have needed some kind of sleep. He tried to wake me at 6 pm tonight. Apparently there was an entire conversation about me taking my meds, which I apparently (lots of apparentlys cause I have no recollection) refused to take because I was talking in my sleep, lol!

Hey all :) I'm listening to, and watching Vladimir Horowitz, conducted by Zubin Mehta, perform the complete Rach 3 - gawd I love this piece! For those non-classical junkies, it's the Rachmaninov 3rd piano concerto, opus 30 in 3 parts, my favorite is the first, Allegra ma non tanto in D minor, the other parts are Intermezzo: Adagio - F sharp minor/D flat major and Finale Alla breve - D minor into D major. He was 75 when this masterpiece was recorded - it took Horowitz, Mehta and one amazing symphony to pull off what is considered the BEST ever recording of this piece. It's believed that it may be the last live recording according to the info on the video. It truly took those 3 components to make this come alive! Rachmaninov and Horowitz were actually good friends, and he said after hearing Horowitz play the piece, that he never expected to hear his work performed so beautifully while on this earth! There are also recordings of Rachmaninov playing the piece himself - but he always said Horowitz did it better!

If anyone is interested in watching this amazing man and his unbelievable hands at work, here's a link: Horowitz Rachmaninoff 3rd Concerto Mehta NYPO 1978 - YouTube

If nothing else - listen to the allegra - it's about 18 minutes long - and you won't believe what you're hearing and seeing, especially if you're a Rach virgin!!

If you like it, try Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18 - you will probably recognize it - not nearly as, erm, heavy as the Rach 3 can seem. Find a Horowitz if you can!

Myself, I prefer any of the first 4 Metallica albums, or anything from Pantera, finely tuned on the surround sound system just to the point where the neighbors wont call the police. ;)
On that note (pun intended), great music is great music. It doesn't matter who, what , where, or when.

Yes, but only the first 4 albums (the early stuff). The newer stuff just doesn't really do it for me, although I do like much of the newer alternative/rock bands I've been hearing in the past 10 years. Their sound and style seems to move back to the more traditional sounds of over-driven amplifiers, but with a stronger bass mix. Good stuff. Here's a few bands I've been listening to as of late:

Sick Puppies - metal / punk
Psychostick - metal / punk / humor
Breaking Benjamin - alternative / hard rock
Shinedown - alternative / hard rock
Godsmack - metal
Avenged Sevenfold - metal
Disturbed - metal
... and many others.

Yes, I'm middle-aged, but it would seem that I have young musical tastes. :D

On the other end of the spectrum, if I'm in a mellow mood I prefer to listen to some good jazz guitar music. Some of the progressions these guys can do on a guitar just blows my mind, and it's great for just zoning out and relaxing.

I totally agree. I listen to it all. I just have a place in my soul for great classical - you can find pieces that rival metal, or are so sweet you start wishing you had a dart board with Anne Murray's face on it...(OK - so I hate anne murray - shoot me?) My Ipod and computer contain probably one of the most eclectic collections around, lol! I have Classic Rock and disco from the 70's, tons of hair bands, pop and punk from the 80's, all of those types of music plus techno, club mixes and country (OK country from about the mid 80's to mid 90's and a few newer ones) from there on till now. But I also have classical recordings from all those time periods as well. I also freely admit to loving early Metallica (something happened for me after Sandman and I just didn't like much after that - was that around the time of the 4th album?) - and I even have some Rammstein! I adore Babra Streisand and the Carpenters too!

I just don't think that people should keep all their "musical taste" eggs in one basket - there's too much out there to just like one genre, or to say that another one doesn't come close enough to your tastes - people might be surprised!

I agree 100%, which is why I added that last line. You basically just listed the variations of my collection also, w the exception of the classical. Its not that I dont like it, I just haven't taken the time to acquire any of it. I have been to over 200 live shows, admittedly mostly metal. However once I hit my mid twenties I opened my mind a bit and came to enjoy everything except the whole crap, I mean rap thing. I will say as controversial and inappropriate as he is, Eminem is a lyrical genius.

Absolutely! With some exceptions (country being one of them), my Zune is loaded up with a very eclectic collection of music as well. Right now I'm listening to Paul Simon - Graceland and doing some (involuntary) chair dancing. Later I might be listening to some Journey or Bob Seger or Five Finger Death Punch or Peter White (jazz). Putting everything on random makes for some interesting playlist choices. :D

If you do not already have it let me recommend Chris Cornell Live in Sweden. Its just him and a guitar, and its 13 of the best, including the last song: Thank You by Zeppelin. You will get goosebumps!

No, I don't already have it and thanks for the recommend! I love Audioslave and Soundgarden, so this will make a nice addition to my collection.

My secret love is the G3 concerts. I have a few of them. Most are bootlegged, I'm guessing, because they're totally shot from the crowd, lol! I figure it's like the Dead - some music transcends copyright - not that I wouldn't pay to have real copies - I just haven't FOUND real copies of the videos I love (except Denver). It was always Joe Satriani (it was his idea) with 2 other guitarists including Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmstein, and so many more. They always had at least 3 guitarists - the music is amazing, one concert had four playing, pure electric guitar bliss! It's been going for like, 15 years now, they've only missed a few years, but every single one I saw was awesome! I think the only one I ever found on DVD was Denver 2003. Check it out if you haven't - I'm sure it's all over youtube, lol!

Yep, I saw that line, which is why I said "people" not you, lol! And I have to agree about Eminem. I really really need to put 8 mile on my watch list! Colin, my other half, is constantly amazed at what music comes out of my computer or our stereo some days - it's funny watching his face with the, "You like that too??" face - because he listens to a lot of stuff he never knew I liked. The other nice thing is he's gotten me into some music I never would have found without him - so I guess we're squared up, lol!

Good evening all. Just found out that the next Dayton Vapers Meet is Saturday, May 8th. If you're in the area or want to make a road trip we would be happy to see you. Check link below for more information.

I doubt that I can make it as my pace is full out RUN til the end of the school year. Maybe I can make one during the summer, tho. Is Centerville close to Dayton? I am about 1.5 hours or so north.

That's understandable. Hopefully we'll get to see you there sometime. Centerville is a suburb of Dayton, about 10 miles south.
