Obesity is the NEW TARGET like Smoking but this is also LIFE SAVING Like our Ecigs
American obesity is finally getting attention of the government due to rising costs, etc. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/
About 80% of my family are obese (including children). They are suffering from all kinds of obese related problems. I have always been thin and it's not due to exercising and dieting. My family still thinks I'm "Too Skinny" because overweight and obesity is now the "NORM" in America.
What I have learned is I never consumed huge amounts of sugar or fructose. This was confirmed by a 1 1/2 hour medical video by Dr. Ludwig on "Sugar The Bitter Truth" a must watch if you or any of your family members are obese OR just overweight having a hard time losing. It's NOT about dieting, calories, fat, or crazy exercising.... it's about what is in just about ALL of our food. Sugar: The Bitter Truth - YouTube
Please share..... it's life saving just like our ecigs
My entire family, meaning from my parents on up, are huge. I am 6' 2", 310lbs. I usually run 250, but 2 yrs ago I fell and dislocated my tailbone and herniated 3 discs. I haven't worked since, practically bedridden. Hence the xtra weight. I am due to have fusion surgery any time now. I was supposed to have it the 12th of April and they cancelled 2 days b4. Anyway, my 4 kids under 12 are all beanpoles. Must of come from my wifes side.
The point is a few yrs ago I went from swinging a hammer for 12 yrs straight, to a Managerial desk job. I piled on the lbs then also. I was able to drop 80lbs in 1yr just by eliminating carbs and breads, you know the drill. It worked great. So, now after my surgery I am going to go on a serious, full life rehab including diet and exercise. Fortunately I love all fruits and veggies, and we have the kids on the same path.
My kids know how to read labels and ingredient lists, and are aware that high fructose death syrup is horrible stuff.

I wish we could come - but Colin may be having brain surgery for his shunt on the 8th or 9th at the Cleveland Clinic - unless they can fix it without major surgery. Because he has medicaid, they'll transport us up and back. We're not even sure yet if they'll have us go up the night before and stick us in a hotel, or pick us up at O dark 30 - his appointment is at 9:30 am and we live 4-4.5 hours away. I really hope they have us come up the night before!
If there *isn't* surgery, there's a chance we might be able to make it

You called me out on this when I bit my tongue - I have friends here too, now let's have them see the reply as well.
Y'all - this is my reply to dragonfly from the 55+ board....PS - it's not HFCS that you have to worry about - it's plain old Fructose. See, I watched the whole video (I don't think that was actually expected):
You asked me to do this. Please remember that.
I watched the WHOLE video - in case you think I skipped school and I'm just pulling what *I'm* saying out of thin air. There was very little that was actually about obesity and weight - only in the beginning to acclimate the audience with the different types of sugars and how the body reacts to them. After he's done with obesity (the first 25 mins or so) the rest talks primarily about fructose and the medical issues it can cause such as liver disease, cirrhosis, muscle, bone, gout and even fetal alcohol syndrome.
It's a lecture not simply on obesity, but the horrible repercussions of fructose on the liver and muscles along with uric acidocis and much more. So maybe the message you should be delivering should be a warning about fructose and its physical danger, not about caring about obesity as the primary the primary focus.
I am obese at 235 lbs. I have a medical condition that prevents my body from processing sugars properly. It's call Stein-Leventhal syndrome. It's also known as PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome. It's basically a disease - not a syndrome - that is caused when a person's body cannot regulate its own insulin properly. Here's Medicine.net's description of my disease:
Stein-Leventhal syndrome: A hormonal problem that causes women to have various symptoms, including irregular or no menstruation, acne, obesity, and excess hair growth. Women with PCO do not ovulate (release an egg for fertilization) every month. They are at a higher risk for high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer of the uterus (endometrial cancer). Much of this risk can be reversed by exercise and weight loss [edit by me, when medically possible, barring physical disabilities]. Medication is generally prescribed to induce regular menstruation, reducing the cancer risk. For acne and excess hair growth, the diuretic medication spironolactone (brand name: Aldactazide) can help. Clomiphene (brand name: Clomid) can be used to induce ovulation if pregnancy is desired. A type of surgery called a wedge resection, in which a piece of the ovary is removed, seems to help some women. No one is sure what causes PCO, but the ovaries of women with PCO contain a number of small cysts.
What does this mean? I'm fat, I'm hairy, I have screwed up ovaries and I can't have children. I found that out at *16* years old - trying carrying that on your shoulders as a kid. Try explaining that to ANY partner that's wanted children - not to mention my own sadness at knowing this. I also found out that I would keep gaining weight, that I would grow a beard (yes, I have a R$#()R$U beard and I have to shave), and that I'd suffer from cystic ovaries my whole life.
I've also known my whole life, that sugars and anything "white" was bad. It's pretty hard to avoid all sugars. It can be done, diabetics do it all the time - I do my best, but I'm not perfect, and even insulin users run into sugars sometimes. I have to test my blood sugar 3 times a day simply because I'm insulin resistant. Oh goody. There are times that eating foods that aren't the best choices is necessary, because with insulin resistance and the medications for it, if you don't eat SOMETHING, you'll have some pretty wicked dietary repercussions.
Yes, I've lost weight, 40lbs in fact in the last year or so. But I'll probably never be under 215 or so pounds. I also have multiple additional medical issues (read my blog if you want to know about all of them, my friends here know my problems) and not ONE has been caused by obesity. My blood pressure is usually 108/72 or in that range, my cholesterol is 147.
I also have an aggressive form of arthritis that the dr's can't figure out that has been plaguing me since I was younger, diagnosed at 23 to be exact (and I wasn't obese at that point in case you were wondering). I actually had to stop hiking because my knees went before I was 20, the formal diagnosis, as I mentioned was at 23. Prior to that, as a natural resources major, I hiked about 2-5 miles a day, each day I had a class - which was 5 days a week and we'd go hiking and caving on the weekends.
I'll be 40 this year. Am I happy to be 40 and have been disabled for six and a half years? Of course not. Can I change it? Nope.
Stein-Leventhal/PCOS is an endocrine disorder that causes slow weight gain over long periods of time (as listed from the medicine.net quote), mimicking other conditions that can be quite serious. Are you aware of the myriad Thyroid, Pituitary and Endocrine disorders out there that prevent people from ever being slim, or anything but at least overweight? I'm not going to base my WHOLE life on what one Dr says - I'm sorry. That's why we get what are called, "second opinions."
The Dr's premise is good, of course. We do need to watch what we eat, but he's not telling us anything new aside from the scary conditions fructose causes! If I've known about it for 23 years (when I was diagnosed at 16) - that means other people have known it as well.
No one is going to lose weight unless they change their eating habits. But along with that you DO need some ability to get up, out and move. Not all of us can do that.
Are you one of the people that looks at me in the store, when I have to use a motorized cart to shop with??
Are you one of the people that thinks, "She's just fat, look at her, there's nothing WRONG with her!"
I'm willing to bet you are.
Before you tell us that *you* want to be the harbinger of all things evil and weight related, maybe you should sit back and consider a few things.
Fat people know they're fat.
We also know we get looks of disgust.
There are no looks of compassion, as there are with other medical problems.
It's not up to YOU to singularly save the fat people of the world.
It's lovely that you decided to lecture all of us about how wonderful you are and how fat we are. There's no WAY we fat people could possibly know how to eat properly, choose natural (ie actual fruit vs juice) over refined sugars. None of that, right? We just like to sit around and be fat fat fat. That's what you're saying.
The concept of removing/reducing sugar from human diets has been around since humans have known how KCal's are measured. It, of course, is also any white food as I mentioned earlier, really we know that too. Fructose (from non-whole sources like a pear) is very bad. I think the Dr made some very good points, but aside from the newest information on Fructose being added to foods for no reason other than it's cheap, is scary - I agree there.
I'm very glad that you're healthy and slim and that the same foods that you eat that keep you that way, don't work the same way in my body, when we talk about things other than sugars - because it's not ALL about sugar.
I'm glad you don't suffer from pain or other afflictions.
I'm glad that a major injury to your body didn't FORCE you to become less active, therefor slowly your weight isn't crawling up.
I'm sorry you've never been so depressed that your whole life fell apart and you did nothing but eat and sleep because that's all you could do.
Do you REALLY want me to go on?
Thank you for caring about my weight. How about caring for me and then we'll worry about my weight. You seem to have it backwards. The only way people will accept your previous lecture is if they know you and know that you *actually* care about them. You don't know me, and your offhanded comments about obesity are insulting not just to me, but to others as well. You come in here and immediately go into a diatribe about how fat your whole family is - but never actually telling us how you're helping them to cope with it and overcome their issues. Instead you're telling us to watch a video that will "change our lives."
Let's get back to the video of the lecture. He discusses the different types of sugars and how they affect the body (primarily obesity, again to acclimate the audience) HOWEVER the major point that he's trying to drive home is that fructose is scary and people should really be aware of their intake and be more body aware. Yes, there are appropriate messages about how a high sugar diet = a high fat diet. Every time he mentions a study on sugar and fat correlation, he makes a STRONGER correlation to the acute dangers of these sugars to the body.
This video should be viewed just as closely by skinny/normal sized people as it is by overweight and obese audiences. It's an act of prevention. There are plenty of thin/normal sized people whose intake of these sugars still allow their bodies process them better...but do they? I know people who are 75 lbs lighter than me and have much much higher blood pressure and cholesterol numbers. There are a lot of people like me, we may be heavier, but we have better body stats, the only thing separating us is BMI. Also, in contradiction to your statement - exercise is *critical* in both reducing BMI & working out some of the less desirable things from beginning to form in the first place.
It's also critical to consume fresh fruit, as I mentioned before, because as he puts it, "G-d packages the antidote with the poison."
I'm all done now, and with respect to my friends here, I will not post anything more about this here. You asked for a public response, you got it. I'm all done now.
You said Y'all !!!
I'm sure you know... but... Y'all is up to five.
For over five it's....All you Y'all. LOL!!!![]()
