Ya folks here on he porch have helped me to feel good and re affirmed my self image. I'm a humble soul , and really don't expect praise for doing the right thing. I just wanted to share the one good thing I did today.
Well you did good and glad you told us!

Matt, I was kidding about bringing the generator. I know you had no room.

The hurricane is still several days away and things could change in a flash. But I bet you do get lots of rain!

We have 4 "motor"? Generators. Hubby has the house wired where, yes, he would have to go start the generator amd then keep it gassed up, but he plugs it onto the house and it will run everything except air conditioning (or heat, but we never have needed it in the winter). We have considered getting a window unit just in case because one of our generators would run it, but so far it has not been necessary. Plus we usually leave for the summer.

So you folks 'knowledgeable' about generators. What do you look for when purchasing one? What names/brands are good ones. Do you have 'em hooked up to you house wiring with the cutover switching and all? Or do you just run heavy duty extension cords to you appliances?

Mike,

$eriou$ly, it all comes down to what do you want available when the power goes out.

For many years, I had just one 4500W gen to run the fridge, a few lights, TVs and part-time freezer cycling using HD X-cords. Now, I have two gens, one with electric (batt) starting. Fortunately I haven't had to use either since I got the latter.

I never saw the need to have an automatic switching unit 'tied' into our service. BUT, many folk locally have, in order to run their air conditioners (power suckers, especially with compressor start surge/spike currents).

Just do a Google for gen help. There are many great non-commercial sites to help ya decide. I used to have several links, but dey be gone wid my crapped ol' hard drives. Plus, the technology has come a ways since I last researched.

Also, I do have a few non-gen hints that I'll have to find in my bytes and possibly the ECF. Remind me if I don't get back to ya in a couple of weeks!

Ummm, I'm willing to bet VA gets more rain than FL from Erika.

Keep in mind, that the stronger she gets, the earlier the northern swing. BUT, if she has the same resilience as Danny did and slips south into the GOM (highly unlikely), I could be in some serious doo-doo.

Regardless, come any June, have your 'cane supplies ready!!!
You got it!

Only the 2nd week. Last week's show was small, but we did what we needed to. Had a blast on the river walk in Owensboro, KY last week. Right on the Ohio River and they allow dogs! Friday nights they have a festival with bands and such. Geordi had a blast getting gushed on by people. We didn't stay long, some of the sound checks were freaking Tasha the freaky dog out, but she was good.

Now in Lexington. Show just started today. Wednesday is always slow. Lots more entries as the week goes on. Gman is seeing all kinds of doggies and is a great little traveler. We work on our training (to start showing him when he is 6 mos old) - just another month!) and he is coming right along.

The funny thing is last week it took him all week to figure out how to get on the bed. He would put his front feet up and look pitiful. I told hubby to stop helping him, he needs to figure it oit himself. Occasionally he would leap up and get this look like "how did I get here?" Finally, the last night he got it down and now he is a happy boy on the bed (NO! hoof chews on the bed kiddo!). He sleeps in his crate at night, sleeps the whole night til 6 am when we have to get up anyway. Sometimes he is such a doofus, but then again, he is a boy... ;)

Glad ya asked, eh?

Oh man - you brought back memories. My kids used to start about the time we backed out of the driveway...
me too.......drove everyone nuts. A 30-45 minute drive to my Aunt's house felt like 3 days to me. Til my cousin took me home one time and gave me games to play, looking for a list of things like cows, certain words on signs etc. The time just flew by.

This is a fitting time for me too. I'm starting anew. I'm recovering well from my surgery. They're even coming to take back all the oxygen paraphernalia today. So, no longer dependent on any machines.
Wahooooo!!!

That's great news, Deb. I hope this gets him completely out of pain d able to walk freely!
Thanks hun! Me too. He tried to put a tiny bit of weight on it tonite and that was a no go. Mike, I'll tell him about the supports, he'd gotten some kind of heel thing. He'll still have the plantar fasciitis to deal with, but at least this should take care of the bone spur.

Johnny, I truly hope that the "Old Timers" don't get tired of a re-hash, so to speak .. and I also truly hope the "New Timers" will gain some degree of insight into the guy that took those early steps back when the roots were still taking hold .. and, when and if the need ever arose again for any of us, and I had the material to work with, I'd do it again (if I were able) .. there is a certain Native American guy that I always think of when I re-play the TX vid ..
I'll never get tired of it either. I remembered some of Elbert Dee's posts, but never remembered really talking with him, so was confused, til Yiddle and I were looking back at the first porch and our first posts. My first post was the day after his last post, but of course, I'd read them all, so that explained my confusion.

Deba,

So glad that all went well! Just do your Mama thing and don't let him push too far too early too quickly.
Jup! He's supposed to work Sat and Sun, but the doc wants him off til after he sees him Monday. Of course he's worried bout them being so short handed, but I told him today after he tried putting a tiny bit of weight on it that I really think he needs to stay off til the doc can look at it. He can't even remove the dressing, the doc has to do it. Hopefully he'll listen, we'll see. Of course I'm not on here much, but am missin y'all.

Finally made it through page 5, man o man do I have a lotta catchin up to do. Hugssssssss

I got off pain medication back in 2012.. it was a rude awakening. Anyway 2 days after they were completely out of my system I couldn't walk. Just so happens I didn't no that my right hip joint was gone. Totally blown out the doctor said 8n the E.R...so I had to have hip replacement. Thank god!! What an amazing surgery it was... it will be 1 year ago Oct 7. I couldn't walk without severe pain for 2 years while in Federal prison. It was like a double sentence for making a bad choice.. anyway the surgery was amazing. I woke up and haven't had a pain since - and walk normal. Nomore limp Nomore pain and best of all NOMORE PAIN MEDS!!!

Also in this discussion don't forget I can just get in the car and go back to Virginia. Got a perfectly good, fully furnished house there. :thumb::lol:

Just like vaping ... nice to have backups.

townhouse with a f...ing homeowners association.

I've got to deal w/ a homeowners association too ... and the board only has 1 member ... my wife.

Definitely have him talk w/ the doc about a support insole. Mine was plantar fasciitis too, I've got the beginning of a bone spurr. The doc said I had a floating arch. At rest, no weight on my foot, I had a normal amount of curve in my arch ... but w/ weigh on it ... my foot just flattened out.

Only Mom.. Mother. GRAMA... ONLY I fix everything... Noone else around here does !!!

Thanks for the generator 'inputs' peoples. I really could get by, even for a extended period, if I could run the refrigerator and heater (natural gas). In the summer time, I wouldn't like, but could put up w/o air conditioning.

But honestly, I don't know if I could move the refrigerator by myself to run an extension cord to it. It took me and our contractor to muscle that dang thing 'in/out' while we were trying to get it level/plumb and in place. Our old smaller one, I could move in/out by myself. So if we go this 'route' might have to bight the bullet and go for something besides a generator and extension cords.

And I don't do electrical work beyond the basics ... so I'd need a contractor to do any hookups of the generator into our 'grid.
