Icm asking for prayers j good thoughts for my Mom tonight, please. Shecs fallen 4 times since Monday morning. Suddenly her legs are too weak to hold her up. Finally reached a point tonight that I couldn't get her up. I called 911 & sent her to the ER. Her bp has been fine, even with the falls. My sister met them at the hospital. She has a massive UTI. It's behind the weakness & recent confusion issues. I can't go see her because of my issues with walking. They've admitted her & have her on iv antibiotics. I don't expect her home until Monday. UTI's are bad news for seniors so be aware, they can cause many problems.

Oh, Boy! I have a pre op appointment next week, with surgery planned for Dec. 18. If you get there ahead of me, would you let me know how it works out.

My inclination is to go for distance and use glasses for close up work. That will probably mean wearing glasses whenever I'm not driving, but no way can I afford the type IOC that is somewhat focusable.

When I get closer to the date, would it be okay if I contact you - on the off chance you get the surgery before I do?

Feel free to contact me, but I suspect my surgery won't get under way until the beginning of 2018 since one of my preliminary appts is not until Jan 2. (Making mental note to report developments in Back Porch 7**.)

**This reminds me of the old joke: A bum was looking for a handout and the homeowner sez, "Go back to my garage where you will find a gallon of gray paint and some brushes. Use that to paint my porch and I will give you a meal and $20 extra."

An hour or so later the bum comes back and sez, "I'm all done - oh, and by the way, that isn't a Porch; it's a Mercedes."

Good morning!

Now, I need to go wake up my daughter, again! She's supposed to be at work in 5 minutes. I think she may be late today. It's more work to wake her up than it is to go to work!

My #3 ex was impossible to wake up. He put his alarm clock in the bathroom to try to force himself to get up. He set the music to come on full blast. Then either ignored it, or got up & turned it to snooze & got back in bed. Meanwhile, I'm super awake & po'd. I finally gave him the grown man & responsible for getting himself up & to work lecture. Divorce was inevitably going to happen.

I used to have a lot of trouble getting up in the morning until I spent a couple of summers as a sort of part-time hermit. I was staying during the week at a cottage on an island where I usually wouldn't see anyone from Monday until Thursday. No power on the island, so I tended to go to bed at sundown. Of course this made me unable to sleep in much in the morning, so I got in the habit of sitting out on the porch to have my first smoke of the day (pre-vaping this was) and watch the sun rise. I did this often enough that I began to enjoy not having to share the world with other people. When I was home on the weekends, I discovered that town was pretty empty around sunrise as well, so I just kept getting up early. Habits are habits; you have to make it a routine for a while and then it becomes automatic. I haven't needed an alarm for anything but some exceptional early rise ever since.

Now I'm 25 years older and don't sleep much at night (maybe 2-4 hours in bed and a few naps during the day), but the habit of getting up anywhere from 5:00 to 6:00 AM has stuck with me. The world is a peaceful place before everyone else starts their day. (I do miss the island in the mornings, though. Sadly, I've given my boat to my daughter and my cousin has sold the island, so that isn't going to happen anymore.)

BTW, anyone who is as strongly averse to waking up as "daughter" and "ex #3" probably has a perverse pride in being hard to wake. (I'm sure I did. "I'm the guy who can't be woke!") They have to want to get up in the morning; set themselves some rewards (rewards administered by others won't cut it) for getting up without delay, and stick to them for long enough to build the habit of getting up at some self-desired time.

I agree! It's not hard to develop the habit. I think he was just determined to sleep in everyday. I'm still glad I refused to allow it to be my problem. Two things I'm glad I learned to do, say "Not my/you business" & "Not my problem". And feel fine about walking away after I've said it.

We're putting on our annual Orphan's Thanksgiving again this year. We noticed many years ago that many of the servers at our favorite restaurant were students at the local U and couldn't afford to travel home for a single day to be with their families. We decided to invite them to our house since our children were grown, moved away, and wanting to begin their own Thanksgiving routines. It sort of grew from there to include other friends with no local family. Looks like 20-25 "orphans" this year. Eva does a turkey, a ham, mashed, and gravy; I bring up wine from the cellar; anyone who wants to can bring a side dish.

I used to have a lot of trouble getting up in the morning

So did I when I was young, but my mother had a cure for it - If she had to call you a second time it was with a squirt gun with ice water...

With less stress and anxiety and insecurity in my life, accompanied with more pain controlled by 8-hour extended-release acetaminophen, I generally get eight hours of good quality uninterrupted sleep at night. I regularly go to bed between 9:30 and 10:30 and wake up between 5:30 and 6:30 every morning, like clockwork.
