@JanetH, your posts left me confused about which airline you were actually flying. I saw ways to read it that you were flying Southwest, as well as ways to read it that you were flying Delta. Then, David Ock seemed to me to read it that you were flying Southwest, so I went with that.

Anyway, I wonder if the change of airplanes could have been due to the need to inspect the engines on Boeing 737s. Splitting up people who bought their tickets at the same time, and presumably paid for them with the same bank card, is incomprehensible.

Our first choice is always to fly Southwest. Unfortunately this time we had to fly Delta to Key West which prompted the comparison to Southwest. I wish Delta would handle their seating like Southwest does.

I've moved my happy donkey to of all places; Omega,?Ga. Can you believe that? I've moved north into the deep South. Go figure.

Welcome back! You're not the only one moving north to the deep south - my sister and her family all left Florida for South Carolina 3 years ago. They love it there and say they'll never move again. We'll see, her daughter, my niece, seems to move every 2-3 years even within the same neighborhood! This year, friends of theirs visited them from Florida looking to buy a house. They couldn't find a one they liked, but said they loved my niece's house - so they sold it to them and moved around the corner! The thought of moving once terrifies me! I hope your move to Georgia is everything you hoped it would be and more.

Well, maybe the house around the corner is much better? Maybe?

Most people hate moving! But, ya know, moving so often could be a strategy to always keep their possessions to a minimum. Living the nomadic life!

Our kids are growing up. Here they are sharing the chicken yard with out two old ladies. The old ladies are at the front…they have the red wattles and combs.

My mother loved her chickens. She had just gotten a dozen new chicks and wanted to put up a fence inside one of the metal barns that were on her property. I was changing duty stations so I had some leave to burn. What a better way to burn it than to spend time on the farm. Anyway, she had some 24-inch chicken wire that she wanted to put in the barn to keep the chicks out of harm's way. There were a few pieces of pipe that she wanted to hammer into the ground to hold up the wire. I was on the last piece of pipe using a 2 1/2 pound hammer to drive the pipe into the ground. Mom is inside the fence with me. I swung the hammer to give it just one more hit to finalize the pen. Well, I totally missed the pipe and hit my hand. When I hit my hand I stopped and looked at my mom and said, "Oh, I wish I hadn't done that." Needless to say, that was not what she was expecting to hear. She started laughing and then looked at me trying to keep her legs together and trying to step over the fence. The fence was 24-inches high and she was just an inch or so over 5 feet tall. She looked at me all the while laughing and told me, "Oh, I have to go ---". Well, with both of us laughing she didn't make it.

Great story!

There is quite a trend these days to keeping chickens as pets. Some folks even keep them in their houses and some who live up north in cold country make sweaters for them like other people do for small dogs. We enjoy our hens but they are, by no means, pets. They have a really good home and quality of life but they are kept for one reason…eggs. We refuse to buy store eggs because we strongly object to the way chickens are kept in commercial establishments.

There is quite a strong pecking order in any group of chickens and newcomers have to learn it and fit in. It's been really interesting watching the interactions between the two older hens and the youngsters the first few days we intergrated them. We found out that one of the old ladies is the top "dog" and she chased the youngsters anytime the came close to her favorite area. They learned really fast to stay away from her and her turf :).

My middle sister who lives in Ft Collins, CO had chickens for several years. They found them very entertaining. They had enough eggs to sell.

We have fun watching them. Especially when they see their purple treat tray. They know they're about to get goodies. They are very fond of cooked oatmeal, shredded carrots and green peas. But the ultimate trat is a wedge of melon.

My grandmother told me that chickens have lice. I've always been afraid of them ever since. She said that all birds can give you lice.

She was raised with chickens. So, I trusted her. Is it not true?

From what I read online the lice are not the same and they cannot survive on humans so you're safe.

@Janet H is correct. They do not get on humans.

Birds can have lice…bird lice…more correctly called feather lice. The operative word is "can". A healthy bird doesn't allow lice to stay on their feathers very long…they preen them off. When I was rehabbing wild birds the only birds that had feather lice were very dibilitated birds.

Good to know. Maybe someday I'll have a chicken then.
I suppose I should correct my statement. It is possible that if you hold a bird that has feather lice one may crawl on you but wouldn't stay on you because they are adapted to feathers. Kind of like fleas.
