Those are actually heels; what looks like feet are just the toes. The knee joint is at the top of the bulgy part of the visible leg, and the thigh is partially inside the body, hidden in the feathers. This is characteristic of the hind legs (only legs of birds) of almost all fast-running animals. Humans are the oddity, with long thighs and short feet (along with apelike and bear-like creatures - the so-called plantigrades); and humans are the only plantigrades that can really run for long distances.Hate to say this, however "Ostrich" knees are "Backwards" and as for their "Feet" - Well that's another story all together (BTW: They can really hurt Ya' if you don't watch out) . . .
