Please, don't vape where you can't smoke

After a brief explanation, I asked my boss, the HR department and my co-workers if they would mine me using my e-cigs and no one did, so I've enjoyed vaping at work for almost a year now.

When at the restaurants or in crowded places, I treat them like regular cigarettes for the most part.

But, I will occasionally just puff once every now and then (not chain vape) while in a public place. Sure, it raises eyebrows and most people wonder at what they just saw. Since no one smells smoke, and they don't see anything else, their brains quickly calm down and everyone goes about their business.

It's my way of slowly introducing the world to vaping without having to give 20 people explanations.

Awesome thread.

I literally just got my first pv so I haven't been put in this situation yet. The libertarian part of me says I should be able to enjoy it wherever I want. The other part of me says "i'll just go into the bathroom and take a few puffs", I'm not very social to begin with and I don't feel like explaining nor rocking the boat. I'd frankly rather just use it in the restroom or a dressing room than go outside with the smokers. It's not a big deal to me.

I honestly think alot of complaints are probably from smokers with a feeling of sour grapes lol, "hey how come he can enjoy himself and indulge but I can't" kinda thing.

DawHoo is absolutely right lets wait till its acceptable through public eyes. The only indoor place i smoke is near the e cig kiosk in the mall and my house.

That's just not going to happen. You know it, I know it. Vaping or anything that remotely looks like smoking will never be popularly accepted. In a dream world, maybe.

Until then, I'll continue to keep vaping everywhere (within reason), and educate all those that ask me about my equipment. I urge everyone else following this thread to do the same.

I totally agree with this, these people really have no clue what we're doing yet and I don't think the element of surprise is the way to educate them. I don't see any vapors around here except the few I know who've been ripped off, I'm enjoying this in secret for as long as I can before the stuff hits the fan, if you catch my drift. Only my co-workers and family know what I'm doing and I still vape out at the "smoker's table". But, you can bet I've sneaked thousands of puffs in restaurants or on planes.

IMO as a rookie, we should treat people with respect and be informative. I don't want to cause a scene and force someone uneducated in the topic to ban me from vaping at the location.

My boss asked me not to vape at work, so I obliged and went outside where I used to smoke. I did explain to her the differences between smoking and vaping, I know she now understands. I still go outside because I understand that the perception by unknowing people is that I'm smoking, and that its dangerous.

Educate people every chance you get, its annoying but if we don't do it they will have no credible information except for what the FDA feeds them.

Nice post J808...this is how I feel about it all...common sense is the best way to deal with uneducated people & kindness goes a long way~

I love my ecig, I really do, but I don't vape anywhere smoking isn't allowed.

The other night at a restaurant, someone nearby had an ecig. This was the first one I had seen in the wild, other than my own. The restaurant was non smoking and it really freaked out a lot of the patrons. The manager or whomever came over, after complaints by customers, that he would need to go outside. His vaping was conspicuous.

Healthier than smoking or not, when vaping, it LOOKS like you're smoking and that's the issue for most non-smokers/non-vapers out there. I don't want these things drawing negative attention. A few people freaking out and poof, this ecig bubble could burst. Let's face it, laws get passed because of people who make a stink, laws like no smoking on the street in certain cities! I am really afraid the whole ecig issues is one Fox News story away from being banned because, 'it's so bad, the FDA won't even rate it a tobacco product'!. Really, think about it.

SO I say, be accommodating to those who don't know and don't vape where you can't smoke, unless it's really known in your area and in that establishment.

I went outside to vape with the guy who was asked to go outside to "smoke". He had some genericish looking ecig, I didn't ask. So I pull out my silver bullet 6v and have a vape with him.

His looked like a cigarette, was shaped like a cigarette and people thought it was a cigarette and that is, what I told him, part of the problem. There are a lot of people who hate smoking, yes hate. And what they hate even more is if they see somebody smoking in a place where smoking isn't allowed and doing so brazenly. It's not the same thing, but it's similar in a way to a toy gun. We know they're way safer than the real thing, but when in public, you don't pull out a toy gun and act like it's a real gun. It freaks people out.

So please, let's be overly considerate of those who don't know about ecigs and vaping. If you can't smoke there, don't vape there. Of course there are exceptions, but when there are people who look like they don't know how to use email (people who are more likely to call their congressmen and senators) refrain from conspicuous indoor public building vaping.

Agree or not, please consider the ramifications.

Thanks.
I couldn't agree more! We have found a healthy alternative to smoking. Why draw unwanted attention to this and "Create a problem?" That's just stupid! I never vape where smoking is not allowed. Why ask for trouble? People who "Push the Law" or circumvent the law, are like rednecks looking for a fight!

Really? I'm quite within my rights to vape in public. There is no ordinance against it, no law against it, and I have the approval of every establishment that I vape in. I would consider the attention to be not only wanted, but necessary. When I started vaping a year ago, almost no one around here knew what it was. Since then, I have spoken about and explained the practice to literally dozens of people. Most of whom I gave a considerable amount of info and even some documentation. Now, almost everyone who approaches me has at least heard of them. And why? Because people didn't keep them hidden.

You hide your vaping, and no one will know what it is, and will be far more likely to believe whatever tripe the anti' are peddling that day. Should you flaunt it and be a jerk about what you're doing? Absolutely not. Be respectful, explain yourself, talk to management. They will let you vape when they understand what it is, and they will pass that info along. I get business cards from several bartenders I regularly do business with from people who want me to contact them about vaping all the time.

Yeah, this is only my opinion, but being secretive about something has never AFAIK, led to it becoming widely accepted. Precisely the opposite, in fact.

Your Mileage May Vary

Yeaa, I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there. We are not pushing the law. There is no law against it except in certain areas(NJ). I have never had someone ask me not to do it. And if I'm not sure if its OK, I ask. Also, I am not a redneck. Nasty comment.

I just took a trip to a local mall(I'm in the valley, we have like a dozen of them). I vaped when I felt like it, and just tried to keep it low key. I only got a strange look when I coughed a little cuz I got a little happy w/ my eGo output. lol I didn't vape in small stores, I didn't vape when a clerk was right in front of me and no one said a word. I wasn't bothering anyone, everybody was too busy shopping to care what I was putting up to my mouth. And I was wearing loud clothing(TieDye and Hawaiian themed shorts). It is pretty obvious that stealth vaping is the best policy when in an area that does not allow smoking. BTW, I was really hoping that there would be a smokingeverywhere kiosk in the mall, but no luck. I'll have to try another mall. lol My plan was to pull up to the kiosk and start vaping on my eGo and eGomega carto and watch the guys response. I envisioned people asking "did you get that here?" "How much was it?" "Does it last as long as the smokingeverywhere?". I had a long list of responses floating around in my head that I never got to use. Oh well, save it for another day.:)
