I am new to using silica, just got two odys last week and a penlope coming next week. So far I have just been using 3.5 mm from COV, and I trim to strands off that are in the channels.

Any suggestions on the best silica or other material for Ody/Peny? Does anyone feel the nextel is better? Was reading the earlier threads and wasn't sure what people's opinion is.

you are using pretty much the best for Ody/Pennys. If you find you run out and need some there are a few places to buy wick. Silicawicks.com, and there are some vendors on ebay such as this one Silica Rope 3 mm Silica Wick High Quality Temperature Resistance 1000°C | eBay

Nextel is good, but from what the others say its either too thick or too thin and you need to make the channels wider on the ceramic, which is fine, but I havent done this. Nextel is a ceramic fiber wick that is by a company called Omega. Its rather costly, and unless you are running real low resistance on mechanical mods or crank up your voltage / wattage the others will be fine.

The 1/16 from Omega is not thick enough for the Ody/Term, etc... I have not tried doubling it up yet. I am afraid that it gets so stiff once torched that if doubled it will create a gap between the 2 legs down each side that will create a path for juice to travel.

Anavid, the stuff I bought from you was 1/8 not 1/16. I have 1/16 and 1/8 that I got from Omega and your stuff was 100% 1/8.
I am also a master carpenter so I've been dealing w fractional dimensions for 20 yrs

Are you sure? the 1/16 is huge in my term, there is no way it will fit without drilling it out some.

Very much appreciated, thank you. It gets hard hearing about this and that type of wicks, then I get thoughts of "O maybe it will be better flavor/TH/etc". Should be good then, ordered the larger amount and have more coming with a preorder that I'll get in a couple months.

Thanks again.

So the wick from COV is pretty much the best to get for this, but since it comes only in 3.5mm we need to trim it down quite a bit in the channels for the Terminator, correct? So, for those of us who don't already have that wick, is there a decent place to get 2 or 2.5mm silica so we don't need to trim it?

Correct me if I am wrong, but it may be good to get the 3.5 and just take out 2 or 3 strands from the channels that way you have more juice being held at the coil. Same reason some double the 2mm and cut one wick of the 2 at the edge of the housing.

Yeah, that's what I'm doing now. I'm using 2.5mm and then have an extra section under the coil. I guess it just seems wasteful to me to buy wick where you need to remove 1/3rd of its mass over 2/3rds of its length. The price is decent enough, and it's apparently really top notch material so I'll do that if that's the best option, but it just seems it would make more sense to get something that'll fit and just tack an extra piece under the coil, which I might end up doing with the 3.5mm anyway. But, hey, you only need to go back a couple pages in this thread to see the breadth of my experience with this atomizer, so what do I know :)

COV sells 3mm.... look closely

Cheers!

New to the odys as well. Still figuring out what works best. I agree on the wasteful part, as it can be. I like wrapping on just one wick rather then two together. Both work though. Maybe if I get bored will try to double the 3.5 as see how that works.

Yeah, wrapping one would be easier than two I imagine. I'm probably going to have to start "wasting" more wick anyway. I've been trying to keep my 2nd piece as short as possible so I'm not chucking 2 inches when I trim it to fit, but that makes it hard to wrap.

Maybe I haven't given this wick a fair chance...I have a ton of it. I tried it when it came in, I just didn't like how easily it came unraveled. Sometimes it's hard enough to wrap a solid wick....even worse when it's several single strands.

Sorry I bailed and left you hanging. I will take some photos tomorrow of all the products we have been discussing so you can see.

After 8 months of using Odys all day, I'm very sure. ;)

awesome tyvm, my silver non res wire will be here tomorrow so hopefully I get to get her going. All I have is the nextel 1/16th and the single wick that came from SVC.

Here judge for yourself, XC-116 and stock Terminator ceramic. The Term is a version 1 ceramic which has narrower channels than version 2
XC-116 001.jpgXC-116 002.jpg
Just because you can maybe get it in there even with v2 ceramic don't expect it to wick all that well all chocked like that.
If you go with just a piece across the top on a v2 it can work

Well there is a huge diff between XC and XS. Mine would fit in there nicely. Your right that wont wick if you smash it in there. However I dont like the open channel style. Thats just mu opinion. Do a search for the "Mr Krinkle method" an ECF search I mean. He begs to differ w me, and hes got a lot more mileage than me.
Pics coming atcha tomorrow. Im crashing.
