I know someone mentioned it, but I just wanted to make it very clear: when people say that nicotine is not terribly or at all addictive, they're NOT talking about those who smoke or have EVER smoked -- they're talking about a) nicotine IN ISOLATION -- no other drugs or compounds WITH the nicotine, for b) people WHO HAVE NEVER SMOKED, or used tobacco in any fashion.

Those who have ever used tobacco at all, and particularly those who have smoked cigarettes, are addicted not just to the nicotine, but to nicotine WITH all those other compounds, either naturally-occurring (MAOIs and minor alkaloids) and those which BT adds, such as ammonia, which make the cigarettes more "efficient" -- more addictive, which makes them for more efficient FOR BT!

What is in the veggies?

Many vegetables contain nicotine, although in much lower levels than tobacco.

Cheerios contain niacin (as do many other cereals and all multi-vitamins).

In a recent test by the CDC of 800 people, 100% of them tested positive for nicotine at some level. It's very prevalent in our diet, and possibly necessary for healthy brain function.

ETA: Doesn't mean that high levels of nicotine are good for you. Just means that at some level it's a basic component of a healthy diet.

ETA2: Unless FlamingoTutu was referring to the levels of migrant-farm-worker-urine, e-coli, or other bad bacteria, extremely commonplace in vegetables, but usually at too low a concentration to be of any concern if you have a healthy digestive system (which is designed to protect you from stuff like that).

The question is how addictive. I went from smoking a pack and a half per day for forty years to vaping zero nic juice in about 3 months. I never felt anxious along the way and am now at nine months since my last cigarette.

However I do admit to being very addicted to the act of smoking or vaping. Not ready to give that up yet. Besides,I enjoy it too much.

Some people do seem to be able to just switch it off. And some really like/need the fiddle factor. Then their is the whole smoking ritual in itself.

My experience with nicotine has been that it's addictive but nothing like I originally thought. After being off cigarettes for almost a year now and experimenting with varying levels of nicotine; I can honestly say most of the stuff that makes you really addicted is the chemicals in cigarettes. However, I think people who say it's no more addictive or harmful than caffeine go a bit too far. I'm a big coffee drinker and there is no comparison.

It was the nicotine in veggies I was teasing her about. A lot of people think nicotine is a carcinogen, even doctors. Nicotine most harmful cigarette ingredient, GPs think | Nursing in Practice

twgbonehead, I'll have to remember ETA2! Nice post BTW. Did you call me Flaming?

Yes. For some reason I always read your name as "FlamingTutu" and laughed! Sometimes reality is not as much fun as what we perceive. A delicate, lacy tutu, on fire, now, that's memorable!

I used to love that B52's song, "You're living in your own private animal" What a great description of the "Body vs Soul" concept!!!
It was a bit of a letdown to find out that they were talking about a "Private Idaho" (...???) but I decided that my version was better, so screw them. I can still like the song. To mis-quote the Talking Heads, "I got a version. That's better than that".

Forgive me if your moniker keeps reminding me of a ballerina on fire. Dramatic, which is what a tutu should be. A much better image for me than a flamingo in a tutu, ...???? Does the flamingo live in Idaho or something? ;-)

I am older; perhaps I've already stopped making sense. Peace.

A particular cup of coffee offers 1000x the cancer risk than a year exposure to pesticides from vegetables. What does this conclude? Well, neither coffee or pesticides are harmful to humans. Because the cancer risk was so low to begin with even when 1000 times worse, it's still safe levels.

Both caffeine and nicotine have health benefits. Man, science ruins everything.

I've been thinking the same exact thing. How can people actually believe that nic isn't addictive. If nic wasn't addictive why are we all here. Why didn't we just quit smoking cold turkey. Oh that's right, we tried a bunch of times but it didn't work. I forgot about that. It's definitely not addictive though. We just vape because it's fun and vape with nic for no reason at all beside we like it. I challenge anyone vaping nic to go cold turkey and quit right now and never go back to it.

Anyone who likes both the B52s and Talking Heads is making perfect sense, in a big floppy suit. :D I think the 70s' music was the best, but the 80s definitely had some high points. :D

Did you read my post at all? to wit:

Obviously "nic isn't addictive" does NOT apply to anyone who's ever been a smoker or any kind of tobacco user!

The Great Nicotine Myth

Just going to leave this here.. :toast:

"The cocktail of chemicals delivered in cigarette smoke appears to rewire the brain, in a manner of speaking, creating addiction in many individuals. Chemical changes are induced that remain permanently or semi-permanently, such that the brain is hardwired to need cigarettes or nicotine. The term 'addiction' is used correctly here, in the modern context, as harm often results from smoking."

What a great article and thanks for the link!
